You need a proper Chinese rice cooker. Once you've got the right ratio of rice to water it comes out the same every time. However these days I'm lazy so I just buy tthe 49p pouches from Aldi which give you perfect rice in 2 mins.

    No! Delicious!
Oops just voted wrong. I thought you meant microwave rice as I love that and its so easy. Dried rice has never worked for me I have tried various ways to make it. Bought a stupid bamboo steamer and just made a mess.

Tilda British Curry Rice is my ultimate favourite microwave rice.

I always put salt in pasta, but never in rice. Then again we mainly use microwave rice....might have to try Meri's tip! :)

    Mine's even easier.

Easy cook long grain rice. 1 cup for 2 people. Boil 1 1/2 cups water. Add rice - bring back to boil. Lid on, turn heat down to low. Leave for 17/18 minutes. No water left, no sticking, no rinsing - just serve.

This is more or less how I do it, but with Thai fragrant rice, and I put the water in cold over the rice in the pan, and bring it to the boil, then turn it down and put the lid on and leave it, it is so simple, perfect rice every time, you simply don't need all these supposedly easier processed and packaged things if you don't want to.

I buy a big 5kg bag of Thai rice for about £7, lasts for ages and is delicious.
Making time for me now. Out with old habits and ideas, and open to change......:j

    As in this stuff... http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=254877362

    And quick cook spaghetti too!

It kinda tastes... dusty... and it's hard and lumpy.

Tho the way this poll is going, I'm feeling outnumbered!

    I agree with you.

I won't buy 'easy cook' rice or pasta.

There is a difference in taste - to me anyway.

'Proper' rice and pasta don't take that long to cook and it's hardly difficult so why bother with 'easy cook'.

I use Tesco Easy Cook Rice, and it's neither hard nor lumpy, and not a bit dusty. And I never manage to burn it (seriously, how do you burn rice?). Throw into lots of cold water, add a sprinkle of salt, bring to boil, then turn down to stupidly low heat for about 15 minutes, drain, serve. Tastes good.

As for microwave pouches - yeuch. I find they have a horrible tang, no matter what the flavour.

It Is frankly unbelievable that so many people can't cook rice properly. It is quite possibly the easiest thing you can do in the kitchen. Easier than boiling an egg or frying bacon.

, salt adds flavour without adding an additional flavour. It also helps to stop the ingredients sticking to the pan.

Yes it adds flavour, the flavour of salt, I much prefer my rice to taste of rice rather than hot rice shaped salt. If you cook rice properly it doesn't stick to the pan or itself.

Stick some brown rice in water and simmer it until cooked, its no more difficult than making a slice of toast.
