In which case, you want to use one of the "measured" methods of cooking rice whereby you measure the correct amount of liquid in relation to the quantity of rice, boil, and switch off all heat. The rice will absorb the boiling water and cook, but cannot burn.

    eta. Post 21 describes this.

Goes quite crispy if you forget about it though :o But I styled it out and actually found it added a new dimension to the meal (chili & crunchy rice did not make it to the regular meal plan, though! ;))

Either you are using too much or you have super sensitive taste buds, as a pinch of salt should not do that. Salt is a flavour enhancer, which is why it appears in so many recipes.

I don't use salt in much of my cooking as neither me or OH like the taste and, of course, it is not good for you. When we eat out I often think how salty something is and it makes me so thirsty

In post #5 the OP has posted a link to easycook rice so it's not the microwave stuff.

I'd have thought the simple solution would be to leave the stuff you don't like on the shelf & buy the 'proper' raw rice.

I do leave all the packets, boil in the bag, microwave stuff on the shelf and only buy proper rice. Just amazes me why so many people would buy rice that is much dearer and doesn't taste very nice when rice is so easy to cook.

I wish the supermarkets would have a bigger selection of proper rice. Me and OH like red rice but it's practically impossible to buy in any supermarket.

Rice is rice. I refuse to pay stupid prices for stuff you bung in the microwave for 2 minutes. Plain old rice is the easiest thing to cook, and much cheaper. Who eats plain rice anyway ? It tastes like whatever you put with it surely ?

Hey thanks everyone. Now I understand why they sell the stuff... people like it!

I always use a japanese rice cooking machine to do mine, you add water up to the markings, turn it on and it comes out the same every time, no stirring needed. Except when they've run out of normal rice in the supermarket..... and the horror of easy cook rice starts ;)

Now I've spotted another pet hate...

Is it really a 'pet hate'?

    Have you tried these eggs?

I personally find things like these eggs pointless and probably a waste of money as I'm sure they'd be more expensive than 'normal' eggs but I wouldn't go round describing things that I can't see the point of and wouldn't spend money on as a 'pet hate'.

    Pet Hate
    noun
"a minor annoyance that a person identifies as particularly annoying to them, to a greater degree than it may be to others"

    I guess I feel that way :o

I burnt rice the other day and i must have had to wash the pan about 10 times to get it clean again. I only left it on low but then came in here in the lounge and it wasn't until the smell drifted in.

Dishwasher powder/tab a little water to cover the burn leave overnight.

Not using much is fine. I don't use it when cooking potatoes or veg. I add it at the table if I think I need it, but I do use a little elsewhere, when I say a pinch, I mean a small amount of grains between my finger tips, not the equivalent of the full sachets you get in cafes. Some salt is essential in diet, I've known this since my early 20s when a friend started having issues, it turned out she'd cut all salt from her diet.

    Really?

A shop selling part-cooked eggs that you would never consider buying and instead of walking past you allow it to 'particularly annoy' you?

I reserve my stronger feelings for things that really matter to me. smiley-rolleyes010.gif

Let some other dimwit buy part-cooked eggs that take longer to boil than a 'proper' egg.
It's not even on my radar.

I use both packet rice and proper rice depending on what I cook and how long I have. It is after all my money to spend how I like. The packet stuff is fine if cooked properly and regular rice is fine if cooked properly.
I also make my own pasta and have packet stuff, again depending on what I am cooking and time issues.
Also buy frozen ready meals same reasons.
We can't all make every damm meal from scratch, or some weeks any meal.
Why would it amaze you that people even buy dearer items?
As for red rice and the like just ask whatever supermarket you use to start stocking it, else visit the local ethnic shops, be amazed at what they sell.
