As I understood her post, she would prefer to try out new holds while 2 metres above the ground rather than 10 metres, not that she won't climb beyond 2 metres.0

The point of sport is to be the best you can be. There's no point turning up if that isn't your objective.
You may roll up to a 10k start line and not be able to win, but you should be aiming to run the best you can.0 -
It's not really rock-climbing if you just hang there just above head height. Same as it's not really playing a game if you have no intention of trying to win.
There's nothing intrinsically wrong with that approach of course, but I can see how it would be irritating to other people who are playing.0 -

That's fine if she's roped to a climbing buddy who's happy to hang around - vanishingly few would be, although the guy on the rope on the indoor climbing wall won't give a monkey's, he's being paid to stand by..................

Don't agree with you there at all. The point of sport is to be active and enjoy yourself. The point of COMPETITIVE sport is to be the best you can be. It is no wonder so many people are being put off activities and exercise when there is such a huge push, push, push to be better all the time. Sometimes just getting out and doing is the fun part not how quick or how high or whatever.0 -
Some people practice techniques on indoor climbing walls, the OP said herself that she sometimes climbs indoors. Ive watched people use these indoor climbing walls before, there's no rules that everyone who goes to one of these indoor climbing centres has to get to the very top every time they go.0

rambosmum does not simply hang at 2 meters though, she tries new moves at that height and then climbs all the way?
However if all someone wants to do is climb 2 meters that is not the "wrong" way to do it.
We all should be allowed to do anything our own way, if that means someone else gets all her up or frustrated that is their problem.
You can't make anyone do what it is you feel is a better way, it just then frustrates who ever is doing it differently.
Eta I use a push bike to get to work and back in the good weather, it means I am keeping fit. However I don't push myself to get there quicker each day. Frankly i would be too scared as roads are so dangerous anyway. But the point remains, I am in no way competitive by myself and if someone decided to tell me I HAVE to beat my times, I would just end up walking all the time.63 mortgage payments to go.

After having an injury a couple of years ago which left me inactive for the best part of 6 months, Im just happy to be doing sport again, relatively pain free.
Why should I be aiming to run the best I can? Im not a strong runner. I did a triathlon early last year, halfway between the sprint and the Olympic distance.
I was just glad that I was in the position to be able to finish it, having thought that it would be a long time before I would be able to again thanks to the injury. Achievements can be measured in so many different ways.
Its not always about doing the best you can all of the time, that's fine if you are a competitive athlete or someone who is naturally competitive.
A lot of people get achievement just from finishing. Think of people who do certain charity races after recovering from serious illness, many people will just be happy that they've recovered enough to be there, they won't care whether what they are doing is the best they can be.
Plus fun, whats fun about rocking up somewhere always having to strive to be the best at something?0
