is your home town cheaper than Leeds , then, and are the jobs there better-paid?

Those are the questions you should be seriously considering. Perhaps think about moving after getting a job back home rather than move and go straight on benefits. Perhaps you should look at finding ways to save money or earn a little more. Ask for a pay rise, get a lodger/ housemate second income?

What sort of accommodation are you living in at the moment?

Could you get paid the same amount in a cheaper area?

Do your parents want you back? Would they charge board?

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Problem with just moving home is - what's the job situation? You might not be earning a lot at moment but do you have opportunities that you might not have?

I'm from a small town originally and a lot of my friends are on benefits or doing 25 hours a week and benefit top-up because there are no jobs for serious money.

So don't just think about right now but also where you want to be.

Why not start applying for jobs in Manchester and then move back in with your mum once you have a suitable job to go to there?

It might be a bit of a struggle to get ends to meet in the mean time, but I think it's better to move with a job to go to and also easier to find a new job whilst you are working. Also, that way you won't need benefits/to rely on your mum financially until you get a job.

Alternatively, if you like Leeds and would like to live there, have you considered house shares or lodging? That can cut your costs hugely and you might fine life generally a bit easier (and work less hard) if you're not struggling financially.

Depending on what area of media you want to work in then doesn't Manchester offer more opportunities than Leeds ? (Bigger city, more TV, radio and allied industries that feed off them).

I'd make a pros and cons list for both cities - from what you've said -financially and emotionally you'd be helping your Mum, financially you'd be helping yourself , jobwise Manchester has more to offer so you need to identify why this is a hard decision emotionally for you to leave Leeds (or is it more about about "having to go home" and seeing it as a backward step rather than as a step towards furthering your career aspirations?).

As you don't see your current job going anywhere then you should be applying for better jobs anyway - whether in Leeds or Manchester (or both and see where fate takes you :) )
