Fuddle rhubarb and ginger trifle is lovely. Ginger cake on the bottom, a layer of stewed rhubarb, custard and then whipped cream. Won't do your diet any good but family will love it.

I envy you your rhubarb Fuddle. Against all advice, I've been trying to grow it here. Apparently harvesting in year one is a no go, but when it hits winter I need to dig it up, bag it up and freeze it for a month. Personally, that sounds insane, but if there's even a slim chance of me getting rhubarb I'm in.

From what i was reading today rhubarb needs a ruddy good frost to rest in preparation for it's regeneration. Sounds perfectly sane to me soft stuff :D do it!

Thank you for the ideas. Oh I just love ginger cake! I have to use up my stock of white flour before replacing with wholemeal so... hmm. :D

I do have stem ginger I need to use up so off to investigate. Thanks friendly folk :)

I should be alright with those cucumbers on the window sill then Lyn. Full sun for a lot of the day.

H0me Barg@ins are doing a mini propogator at £4.99. Actually 3 separate ones within a larger frame that fit on a windowsill. I now have two of these. They are so good for starting off seedlings, you can do hundreds at a time if you're that way inclined. Now, what to do with 70 tomato plants?......

Mar, you are absolutely not allowed not to like rhubarb and ginger. Ahem. How was this cooked? I must confess that i adore rhubarb but only if it is cooked with an indecent amount of sugar. Preferrably in a crumble. With custard. Drool.

Jazee. Thanks very much for that information but we don't have a Home Bargains on the Island, or at least I've never come across one. Anyway, I bet it's not as dinky and pretty as my cute little miniature greenhouse. And thank you Camelot, it is perfect for growing caress. Oh yes, crests too. I WILL get it
Caress caress caress CŔESS CRESS CRESS !!!!!

Phew. By the by, we always used to sow mustard and CRESS but mustard seems to have disappeared. I remember that you had to sow one several days before the other so that they reached adulthood at the same time. I loved the peppery taste of the mustard. Anyone know what happened to mustard seeds? Can you still get them?

Monna You can still buy mustard seed sometimes it's with the salad leaf seeds or the herbs . if you are near a decent size h*me b*ase I have bought it there .
Mar I have a lifelong dislike of rhubarb (and parsnips ) my dad and both grandads had veg gardens and allotments and seemed to bring a ridiculous amount home . I love all other veg but those two were like the gift that keeps on giving . I love ginger in all its forms . Good for joints . digestion and other ailments . It tastes lovely too.

I really dislike rhubarb, and custard but the crumble part is delicious! The only thing that grew in our last garden was rhubarb, rabbits don't like it either. I always gave it away to work colleagues, at least it didn't go to waste.

I really must get some seeds sorted out but the sunny windowsill could be a problem here, the sun doesn't usually shine very much although the last few weeks haven't been too bad. I bet if I sow some seeds it will rain forever.

DD has bought some window boxes that fit over the anti-jump rail outside her windows. I have been detailed to fill them with flowers and herbs, do you think some small tomato plants will grow ok?

I'd say that it depends how small small is. I bought some dwarf cherry tomatoes about 6 months ago. They eclipsed the 6ft fence they're on and are now going sideways.

Then again, the white ginger I bought has flowered and it's not a ginger at all, but a canna. Not a bad looking plant, but sure not a ginger.

Anyone have any suggestions how to use marjoram? Bought a cheap plant a few weeks ago, now have a large patch ofnit growing merrily. Much like a few other herbs down my green alley, they were bought primarily because they'd grow there rather than me having a use in mind!

I have learned to like rhubarb. It's very forgiving towards novice growers, ahem. I have to sweeten it though. I tell you what is lovely - rhubarb curd. I made it last year but had to be careful as the egg can curdle.

You will all be pleased that you are my online friends and not about to meet me tomorrow. I've had a cold for the past 5 days which has now gone to my chest. I'm at the 'oh oh, maybe antibiotics stage' but no, I decide to try the pre antibiotic way and sup crushed garlic, cayenne pepper and honey with my green tea 3 times a day. I smell from breath to pores:eek:

Fingers crossed as I'd like my immune system to beat this one without antib's. It's particularly nasty so smelling in aid of future health is good right? Poor, poor DH :rotfl:
