  • Have just heard that sadly Nell isn't shortlisted for the last interview, she's Ok about it, disappointed of course but will be fine with having been called to interview in the first place.

Lyn: it's so easy to be wise and philosophical for someone else but it just wasn't meant to be for Nell. At least, not just now. I have lived long enough and dealt with so many different situations that I can say with confidence that a few years down the line Nell will look back and think, "Ah. So that's why it happened. If I had got that job I wouldn't be where I am now and these wonderful things would not have been possible."
With her lovely temperament, there are great things planned for her that she can't even dream of.

  • MONNA it's fine, we've been in contact and she said all along she really didn't think they'd appoint internally and felt that if there were candidates better fitted to the future development of the school they would have to make an external appointment. She's a department head and a very successful one so she's already climbed up the progress ladder higher than many get, she'll keep doing what she does so well and in the future who knows? TPTB have already got a training programme in mind for her so she'll gain from this even though she hasn't yet got the deputy headship, she's very feet on the ground sensible and content with her life as it stands.

Lyn: she is a sensible and obviously talented girl. There is a danger in climbing too far up the career ladder. My brother was the youngest deputy head in his county and absolutely loved it. He got on so well with his head and once said to me that he would go to work without any pay at all he loved it so much. I don't think his wife subscribed to that view! In due time he was encouraged by TPTB to apply for a headship which he duly got. He was very successful as a head, had glowing, outstanding OFSTED reports and was highly respected by his staff, parents and the children. It nearly killed him.
Eventually his doctor told him that if he didn't retire early he would be dead within 6 months. He was so conscientious that he never stopped working and in the end it made him very ill. That was about 20 years ago, he is now 70 and has had 20 years of joyful retirement.

I don't know why I am telling you all this except that sometimes I shudder when I see young people intent on climbing the career ladder. I want to tell them that if they are happy doing what they are doing, to think very carefully about moving upwards.
I know that I also was a head but I was a very different character in a very different school environment.

    Love to you and Nell.
