Hello MARGARET nice to see your name pop up on the thread again, how's that little grandson of yours coming along? our Zebra is walking everywhere now, and trying for independence in all things.....which leads to some melt downs as he isn't able to do whatever he thinks he can! Bless!!! Hope all is well with you and Tommy and that your lovely family are all ticking along nicely as well. We are plodding along, getting the veg plots sorted and planted and bringing on lots of things in the hothouses, He Who Knows is outside sawing up yet another tree trunk that's been given to us so we'll be warm next winter, can't be bad. Docky is still with us, his tumour is growing noticeable every day now but he's still able to do all the things he used to and we'll keep him fit and active and happy until the vet tells us he's not a happy boy any longer. I think we'll have a break from pet ownership for a while after that and do some of the things we've not been able to for a while because of not being able to leave him, we'll miss him though, as you say they get into your heart don't they? I've just been watering in the polytunnel, it's the first time I've been warm all day!!!0

Another day of various kinds of showers and some sunshine. I sat in the conservatory for 10 mins when I came home as it was warm in there!
I know what you mean about animals getting into your heart, we had a dog for 15 years who had to be put to sleep about 5 years ago and I still can't bring myself to get another. Part of me wants one but part of me likes the freedom and it wouldn't be fair to be at work and leave a dog at home.
Popperwell, are you able to get a cardboard box big enough to put your 'c' tree in?
I had the dreaded interview today and true to form I messed it up! Never mind, there's always again.0 -
Thank you for the kind words and welcome.
I find this to be such a warm and welcoming board but I do tend to be a bit shy which is a bit daft really at my age.
Its been really cold here too and I have had a jumper and cardi on today. I even turned on the heater in my workshop for most of the morning. I was going to plant out the veggies a couple of days ago too but I'm so glad I left it as we have some very heavy frosts for the past couple of nights. Fingers crossed it will go away soon.
Off to bed now as I have another 5am start and I like plenty of sleep.

Goodness, you have all been busy.
Our weekend was as manic as we expected it to be but I managed to make all my cakes and sandwiches on time and just as well, I 'm not sure how many turned up but when I was serving cups of tea the queue never seemed to diminish. I took a tip from my old Mum who, when being given orders for tea ( weak with little milk, strong and milky, not too much milk please....) used to pour all the cups out the same but would pass them down the table saying, "weak and milky, strong with not much milk, etc. etc. and everyone seemed satified.
By, it's chilly here today. Sunny but with a cutting breeze. I can't match your arctic temperatures Mar but we did put the heating on for a while this evening.
Lovely to see parsniphead and Margaret54 posting again. Please don't worry about not remembering what everyone has posted about. Just give us your news and your thoughts about things and we'll all be well pleased with that.
As the last couple of weeks have been such good drying weather I now have a largish mountain of clothes to iron. So tomorrow I intend to spend the afternoon with a selection of CDs and my ironing board to make a good dent in the pile.
Well, that's what I think now.

What a good idea about the Christmas tree. I've almost run out of storage space but if you saw how little I have you'd ask how. As Andrea and myself were discussing coming home from the music club tonight, some properties are not as large as people think if you say something like "You have three bedroom house or whatever" Homes today I think(?)often have inbuilt cupboard space because few have enough room for items like chest of drawers/wardrobes. I was thinking of using what I call a box/utility room.
I'm also caught in that though every home has a room that is "Off limits" to guests and you store items like luggage, perhaps something you do as a hobby you get mixed messages from the landlord. They admit privately their homes are often in a mess or they have a room where awkward stuff is put...then in the next breath they threaten to take photo's or your tenancy.
I can understand concern over clutter/hoarding if exits are blocked but if gangways/doorways are clear and its a room you are not "Living" in I think its a bit "Over the top"
The airing cupboard has been taken away for a combi boiler but there is a lot of room in there still(unused)so it may be ideal for storing the tree. Reasonably dust free too(out of sight)perhaps a very large plastic sack/sheet or some joined up. For now everything is on top of a wardrobe waiting to be opened up.parsniphead wrote: »Thank you for the kind words and welcome.

Goodnight all.
I think we are all a bit shy in our own way...Its still no warmer here, temperature is colder than earlier in the day but I feel warmer. I like my sleep too.
I don't overeat, often one meal daily and not big portions is food and I am bothering again. I had a salmon/spinach/lemon fish cake, wild rice and hash browns for tea.
I'll have a salad or a salad roll for lunch(I think)I haven't for ages but as I going to get into some more housework I am thinking of fruit and porridge for breakfast and even I don't eat it tomorrow I think I'll do a home made soup/stew/casserole in the slow cooker. Probably vegetables and some kind of meat. I've treated myself to some Jersey Royals too:)
Burtha verifies how cold it is here in Co. Durham...I can't say how long it is since I went to the Metro Centre. Decades. Perhaps I will visit soon just to say that I have been but I don't plan to bring anything home with me. Really my biggest outlay when shopping is probably food which generally every town has the same shops.
1am in the morning here and I'm eating mini-fruit ice lollies:rotfl:then again I was in Tesco's at Midnight!"A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Morning all,
Pops a couple of large bin liners might work, or an old sheet or curtain as I know you've been replacing some things. Wrapping it around and securing it with pegs or safety pins might be easier than trying to wrestled a decorated tree into a bag.
Burtha, Margaret and Monnagran it sounds as if you've all been very busy as usual!
I have to say I was proud of my work yesterday. I only stumbled on a couple of practice questions, and OH threw in some I hadn't thought of yet. I will probably have a better idea of where I stand after my meeting tomorrow. In the mean time I'm still working on my writing. I've been back to working full days this week, but may cut back on the writing and go to half-days of just exam prep in the coming weeks again. I keep trying to think what I'd tell my students to do for their exams--take plenty of breaks, eat and sleep well, get plenty of fresh air and exercise and take the revision slow and steady. Maybe I should take my own advice instead of panicking.;)
I ended up making red pepper soup with bread, cheese and hummus last night as we didn't finish running through questions until a bit late and poor OH looked shattered when he came in. The leeks will be fine today and I can start tea a bit earlier. He said he felt better this morning but he still sounds awful.
Mum has sent me a box with some old buttons and notions from my great grandmother's things to use in my sewing. She also sent a wool skirt of her own that she said I could cut up or cut down and some mystery item. I can't wait.
I think tomorrow might be the Ald! Voucher, since there wasn't one last week and a few people have said it might be tomorrow. Ald! Vouchers always make me wonder how NuttyP is getting along as she used to very kindly remind everyone when she was getting them for herself and her mother. I hope she isn't too overwhelmed with the new work and that her health is improving and Buddy (I think it was Buddy!) the dog is taking well to his obedience classes. Pop in and say hello if you have time and are reading, Nutty.0 -
FPK your red pepper soup sounds lovely, We had HM carrot and lentil yesterday which is surprisingly filling and really cheap and easy to make. Good Luck with your exam prep; however old I get, this time of year always brings back a deep seated panic of 'summer term/revision/exams' even though it's years (well, decades :rotfl:) since I graduated.
Monna I like your one size fits all tea making strategy:)
Pops how organised are you with your tree - it's getting near that time when people at work start talking about booking the Christmas meal and spend the next few months arguing about venues and menus. My boss and I went for a festive coffee instead last year and avoided all the hassle! I must admit that we bought an artificial tree in January at a ridiculously reduced price, just a slim fit one which will fit nicely in the corner.
Mar I hope your weather is a little better - it's miserable here and quite chilly but we did have two lovely weeks so shouldn't complain too much.
I often wonder how nuttyp is, especially Aldee voucher time reminds me.
Off to ring the vet now as our little Labrador is very off colour, keeps licking her lips and looking miserable, so unlike her normal self. Hope our favourite vet is in today.
Have a good day everyone and keep warm and dry x0 -

The difference is about right for rural and a big city. All the big buildings retain heat and raise the temperature of a city.
If you have an unheated porch ivyleaf that is a good place to harden off plants. It is a cooler place to put them over night. We have been having frosts this week I don't know about you.
Thanks Maggie, unfortunately we don't have a closed-in porch. I put the plant in a shady place just by the door y'day, that will just have to doI think I will re-pot it too, it's really much too big for its pot now but I'd hoped it could manage until i could plant it out but perhaps not the best idea.
ETA Plant has now been re-potted and is back in its sheltered corner at the front of the house. I thought it would be a good idea to keep it out of the wind.0
