Turning left there looks a very dangerous manoeuvre, joining a fast flowing 3 lane arterial road into central London via a slip road going off it. No wonder the blue arrow and green arrowed light are so specific about the direction traffic should follow. If I recall correctly there is a warning sign of no access to A13 before the underpass.

I think 3 points and £100 is a very light award considering the carnage you could have caused.

It is a legitimate slip road but only for traffic coming South. So it's not dangerous. Once the awkward U-turn has been made, there's plenty of slip road, and it's only a 50mph limit on the A13.

    Any forbidden turn is dangerous.

    Bit melodramatic.

Potentially dangerous, I should've said. Depending on traffic and pedestrian conditions at the time.

For there to be an enforceable no left turn, the road needs to have a Traffic regulation order" otherwise no offence can occur.
Should you turn right = yes, is it a offence to turn left, that depends on the Traffic regulation order.
If the signs were red border or "order signs" as they are, then I would suspect there is a TRO in force and you broke it.
As it is only a positive guidance sign, then I would contact the local authority for that area and request they make the TRO prohibiting a left turn available for inspection, it is a public document so FOI does not apply and they can not demand a fee to see it.
If they have no TRO in force, you might just have them here, they might not offer any evidence at court to avoid having to re-pay everyone that did pay up.
Plus they like to keep doing it if its a good earner for them.

But the blue sign is a mandatory sign, instruction all drivers at the junction to turn right. No sign prohibiting a left turn is required. It's similar to coming up to a T junction which adjoins a one way street. The only sign may be, for traffic coming from your direction, a blue sign instructing everyone to turn right. That's sufficient. Another sign, prohibiting a left turn, isn't required, since the blue sign is a mandatory instruction.

The OP was reported for failing to comply with the green arrow on a traffic signal - a TSRGD offence.
The discussion about TROs, Blue signs etc. is irrelevant and does not apply in their case.

Why are you assuming everyone knows what TSRGD means?

Fortunately Google is our friend. ;)

I have already explained the offence - post 45.
  • Thank you to the nice helpful people who have commented. as for the other smart alec's. I obviously know it was wrong, i was just asking because there is not a sign to say you can NOT do it. I know there are numerous arrow pointing to the right but was seeing if i can get out of it as i didn't cause 'carnage'
I drive around this area all of the time and everyone does this, (i know that still doesn't make it right) and there are never any pedestrians at that point of the road, don't even know why a crossing is there.
Plus, after doing the sharp left , you are not directly on the a13, its a very long slip road that leads up to lights before you can access the A13.

I have had my licence for 15 years and have never had any points on my licence. was just being lazy to be honest as the alternate route to get on the a13 is longer.. i didn't hurt anyone nor did i cause any danger to anyone else around me.

I didn't post because i didn't think i did wrong- i know i did wrong , i just asked about the signs and whether i could get out of it due to there being no signs to say that i CANT do it!
