I have a cornish pasty in front of me, 135g weight,

    369 calories
    22g fat
    10.3g saturated fat
    1.1g salt

Based on that I'd say the numbers are correct. Anything with pastry in shops seems to have very high calories and fat. Having said that, one quarter of that pie (serves 4) is perfectly acceptable as part of your diet.

There is no pie that serves 4, the total weight of the entire ready meal (including the potatoes and peas) that serves 1 is 316g.

The pie only weighs 155g so is around the equivalent in calories to the pastie you have in front of you. That would mean the peas and the potatoes are around 1500 calories between them.

The numbers are not correct, it's a mathematical and scientific impossibility to make a 155g meat pie, that is edible, with that many calories.

    Meal is 361g

    broken down as
    80g peas
    126g mash
    155g pie

Peas are 92cal per 100g (not much to vary this much)

Mash is 95cal per 100g (with a 10% non potato content)

which gives a total none pie calories of the meal of 193 calories, which leaves 1649 to get from a 155g pie.

Pure butter is 730cal per 100g so even if the pie is just a 155g lump of butter we are STILL 520cal short.

    Maths and facts dont lie.

    Its a mistake.

Thank you, at last, someone else who can see the maths just doesn't work.

Whilst I realise that this issue has provided much entertainment for a fair few people, I can't stand the suspense of not knowing. I've emailed Asda customer service & am awaiting a reply.

I'm half tempted not to post their comments to keep this lively debate going for longer :p

I've found this thread quite sad really. It's a poor reflection on how people in the UK have a) a poor grasp of basic maths b) an even poorer grasp of basic cooking and what food they put in their mouths and c) believe anything written on a label.

There are too many people who have not been able to grasp the size of the pie by simple % calculations.

Then there are and even more who have no grasp of the basic recipe of pastry. How could anyone believe that 70-80g of pastry could have over 1400 calories? have they never made pastry? Can they really not think how much fat they would have to put in pastry to reach that many calories and that if they did it wouldn't be pastry anymore? Come on people, butter is 795 kcals per 100g, there's only 70-80g of pastry in the whole pie. where does the flour and water go? It's not rocket science, it's just cookery.

Would they happily be munching on a 700 calorie meal if there's been a mistake the other way and the label said it only contained 200 calories? Could they not see that that could not be right?

    Sad, sad, sad.

I have a reply from Asda:

Thanks for your patience whilst I have looked into this with our Buying Team.

They have just been back in touch with me and have advised that there has been a mistake made with the product packaging. This is something they were already aware of and is currently being rectified with the Suppliers. I'm really sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Below I have included the correct Nutritional Information for the pie and mash meal:
Total per serving (361g) Serving per 100g
    Energy (kJ) 2521 701
    Energy (kcal) 602 168
    Protein 22 6.0
    Carb 65 18
    sugars 5.1 1.4
    Fat 26 7.3
    saturates 13 3.6
    Fibre 10 2.9
    Salt 1.8 0.50

So, the ready meal has 602 kcal per serving. Somehow they've multiplied the calorie content by three in original packaging

I also received call from ASDA today

The meal has 602 calories. They are currently reprinting the packaging and should be distributed around stores in 3 weeks or so.

They also are sending me a a gift card with £50

Only £50? They're sending me £100 cash by chauffer driven limo and I didn't even contact them.
