Making a fresh meal from scratch doesn't have to take that long.
I used my slowcooker to make soup over the weekend, so that must be about 40 portions.
Yesterday i did a casserole in the slowcooker, i guess about 9 or 10 portions , and tomorrow i'll probably do a curry so that will be another 10 portions, All bagged up and in the freezer so you can have a meal in less time than it would take you to go the chippy.
Things are thrown together and left to cook overnight.
If you haven't got the freezer space you can cook just one or two portions overnight ready for the next day.

Yeh but ready meals are still faster and very low hassle. I do make a cottage pie every now and then and also spaghetti bolognese

With respect, but the calorie intake per person is only a GUIDELINE.

If you are a fatty, or if you are doing something which involves consuming large amounts of calories and then burning them off (swimming) then your calorie intake is going to be higher in which case a nice 1842 pie (equivalent!) will go down well.

Not to mention that the pie looks as if it should be served in 4 portions, thus putting the amount per serving as much "healthier" than some other foods you may stuff your face with without considering the calories. I've just eaten a whispa chocolate bar now and it had 265 calories of not so healthy stuff in it. If I eat two (and I could!) then it is more in calories than a portion of pie, MINUS the possibility of some nutrition in the form of peas or meat! Not sure if I could eat another 6 mind you, but it is not unimaginable.

I don't know where you've been shopping (the 1960s?), but you don't get 4 portions of pie, mash & peas for £1.50.

Not only that, but the pack size is 361g. Just enough for one.

The nutritional info is a mistake. Next time I go to Asda, I will check the pack and let someone know.

It's 361g for the entire meal and says 'Serves 1' on the box, can't see where you're getting 4 portions from.

I tend to find most meals that claim to feed 4 people only feed one MSK!

OP says he's already looked in Asda and it's incorrect on the pack too (post #14).

Pies are high in calories because of the oil (margerine in pastry)

I'm sure oil (fat) has the highest calories per 100g of all foods. Something like 900 calories per 100 grams.

That still wouldn't account for a meal with that high a calorific value.

100g of factory produced shortcrust pastry is 470kcal

    http://groceries.asda.com/asda-webstore/landing/home.shtml#/product/910000447548

That pie has 49g of pastry in it (29% of 155g) = 230kcal.

    It's a mistake.

Makes more sense to see it for myself first.

The pack photo has it wrong, and the OP might be referring to that, rather than the actual pack in-store.
