it's the emporium. It is probably the closest their customers come to real food.0 -

Oh, definitely
And even if the pack in store says the same, doesn't mean the maths is right.
I fact looking at the figures again, it looks like someone, somewhere has worked out the 100g/1kg value of the meal and forgot to divide it down for the 361g pack size.
1842/1000x361=664kcal, which would be pretty much spot on.

Ah, I was going off an earlier post which was on here. No big deal.0 -

100g of factory produced shortcrust pastry is 470kcal
http://groceries.asda.com/asda-webstore/landing/home.shtml#/product/910000447548
That pie has 49g of pastry in it (29% of 155g) = 230kcal.
It's a mistake.
Puff pastry has a far higher percentage of fat content.0 -

What has puff pastry got to do with it? The pie in this ready meal is shortcrust. Evenso:
Puff pastry has 5.6 calories per g
Shortcrust has 4.4 calories per g
If it were puff pastry the pastry element would still only be 274 calories. Not enough to make the meal 1842 calories.

Only the base is shortcrust. It has a puff pastry top. And how do you know how many calories it contains? I could make you two identical dishes but one could have double the calories than the other and you wouldn't know unless you had a list of exact ingredients by which to calculate.
In fact, 20% of the pie consists of puff pastry, so I suggest you recalculate as that pie is almost 50% pastry!!0 -

Yes, apologies, the top is puff, I missed that.
So that's another 100 ish calories (can't be bothered to do the sums right now).
Still isn't anywhere near 1842 calories, more like 700.
As for the calories in pastry, it's pretty much a set value, if you alter the proportions of fat to flour it, well, isn't pastry anymore.
And as for this:And how do you know how many calories it contains? I could make you two identical dishes but one could have double the calories than the other and you wouldn't know unless you had a list of exact ingredients by which to calculate.
What a ridiculous argument, so you think ready meals aren't churned out to the exact same recipe time after time? How do you think they get the info to put on the back of the pack? Or is there a chef in Asda making these meals up fersh every day ad hoc? :rotfl:Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
1842 calories is a lot. (Isn't nearly the entire daily intake for a woman?)
As a comparison, the biggest meals at KFC come in at 1300-1400 calories.0 -
I have a cornish pasty in front of me, 135g weight,
369 calories
22g fat
10.3g saturated fat
1.1g salt
Based on that I'd say the numbers are correct. Anything with pastry in shops seems to have very high calories and fat. Having said that, one quarter of that pie (serves 4) is perfectly acceptable as part of your diet. It's someone else's fault.0 -
Meal is 361g
broken down as
80g peas
126g mash
155g pie
Peas are 92cal per 100g (not much to vary this much)
Mash is 95cal per 100g (with a 10% non potato content)
which gives a total none pie calories of the meal of 193 calories, which leaves 1649 to get from a 155g pie.
Pure butter is 730cal per 100g so even if the pie is just a 155g lump of butter we are STILL 520cal short.
Maths and facts dont lie.
Its a mistake.0
