Holidays abroad - or lack of them, impact on child

Sometimes it's not just about money. We never went abroad when I was a child because we always holidayed with my grandparents and my grandmother wouldn't fly. After a particularly bad experience on a ferry to Ireland my mum wouldn't sail either. That kind of limits your holiday options ...
When I went on holiday as a kid, we didn't fly. My mum didn't fly until she was 40. Sometimes you can be scared of things you've never done and that gets passed down. I flew when I was 21, no problems at all but I got worse as I got older, terrified.
Over it now, but took me a good few years to get back on a plane.
One thing I remember about going on holiday to Denmark was the seasickness (because my mum and uncle wouldnt fly we went on a boat and we were unlucky as it was terribly rough seas).
My brother didn't fly until he was 19. I dont think he went abroad until then, he went to Spain a few times with pals and he goes to Turkey (Kalkan) twice a year now, if someone asked him did he miss out by not going abroad every year (he holidayed with my mum in the UK and Ireland a few times), I think he'd say no to that.0 -

camping does allow for getting in the car and having days out.
That is so beyond inappropriate, I don't even know what to say.0 -
Hi OP.
We too live in an affluent village but our children go to the largest of the two schools in the area, which attracts children from nearby, less affluent villages too.
My eldest is 10 in a couple of months and will be going on a proper holiday abroad for the first time in May (ie on a plane).
If the school were to set homework like this I would be complaining to the teacher and then the Head if I didn't get a satisfactory adjustment to the homework set. You've already spoken to the teacher so there is surely only one place to go? If you were to raise this with the Head I would do it in writing and in a formal capacity asking for a meeting to discuss why it is felt that setting homework that excludes certain children is acceptable school policy.
There are lots of reasons why holidays abroad do not happen: financial, injury, disability, illness, caring responsibilities, so the school should not be making such ridiculous demands of its children and parents.0 -

Clearly. Although I have a feeling he thinks he's being "funny" as opposed to purely provocative, and that is very, very sad!0 -

Your post abt not going on holiday was pompous, this post is just plain disrespectful.0 -
I only ever see TBeckett comment to say his children have been to some amazing destination or he spends £10000000000 on his wife at Christmas.
We aren't impressed. We don't care.
I don't anyway...!0 -

All of his friends go on at least 3 holidays abroad each year.
When I spoke briefly with his teacher, she simply said "Well, perhaps you need to think about starting to offer him these kind of opportunities as he is going to be left even further behind his peers if you continue to hold him back."
Don't believe a word of either of these statements.
