Holidays abroad - or lack of them, impact on child

OP, Just read what you'd written about the attitude to the Indian child in the school. I am truly appalled and not at all surprised that Ofsted commented. This on top of the attitude of your boy's teacher makes me furious.
First and foremost you have to try to help your son this weekend to do a piece of homework he's happy with. personally I like the Wales idea but then I would because I'm a foreigner from Wales!!
Beyond that I suppose it depends how far you want to go. You have every justification in making a great big fuss over this with governors and the Local Authority.0 -
Why not? Horrible people can become teachers. There is no reason to doubt the OP.
Of course you're right but my guess is that this teacher has been thoroughly spoiled by working in the cosy environment of this Cotswold school, has forgotten what it's like in the world outside and lost all sense of perspective. Maybe she's a relative of George 'We're all in this together' Osborne or 'Call me Dave'. She certainly sounds distanced from reality.0 -
I think you should commend yourselves for putting your children's financial security before slapping a week in a concrete jungle eating English food on a credit card.
Can't think of anywhere nicer than a holiday in Devon.
Teachers comment is what's wrong with this country nowadays.
My children went to France as early teens but was in a tent & they thought they were hard done by because the rest of class went Florida. Did them no harm.0 -
Thanks for all of the support (most of you!) I obviously missed TBeckett100's lovely comments :j SUCH a troll! In addition to all of those who pointed out to him that we had limited funds/hubbys car crash so inability to travel etc... just also wanted to say that money WAS a big factor - Although I work full time, I was the ONLY wage earner for about 4.5 years... Hubby was a landscaper so was unable to return to work in desk role etc...The company he worked for went bankrupt shortly after his accident, but even if they hadn't, that industry rarely pays anything other than statutory sick pay - and that stops very quickly! I also had to take a fair amount of unpaid leave over those years to transport him to numerous appts each week - physio, consultants etc..
I really don't understand why SassyBlue thinks either of those statements is untrue....
3 foreign holidays per year on average is hardly like I am suggesting that they all eat ground up diamonds on their coco pops, is it?! Usually they will have a holiday during Easter or October half term, 2 weeks away during summer hols and then a LOT of them go away either over the Christmas period OR just after at the beginning of January... I believe from hearing the general chit chat at school gate (on the rare occasions I am there - childminder usually picks up!) that skiing is a must each year plus a couple of "hot hols" - usually south of France then somewhere else. Not sure why I feel the need to explain and justify the comment for you,but there we have it
And there is no way for me to "prove" that his class teacher said that to me.... so I won't try! But this is the same teacher who, a couple of years ago, tutted at my husband when he went to watch assembly on his crutches and asked whether he could possibly have a chair as they were all taken - nobody seemed to want to move or give up their chair, despite him standing by them for ages probably looking fairly uncomfortable, hence he asked for another from somewhere and she tutted and wandered off without producing a chair
Again, thanks to everyone who has given their thoughts and support. I have spoken with my son about it - he wants to write about South Devon which is where he has been on holiday nearly every year of his life (bar about 2 years when my hubby was in hospital then in wheelchair - once he was on crutches we were off again lol) .... (near Salcombe)... so thats what he will write aboutHe has been researching today on Google and wants to get on with it tomorrow!
I won't be reporting it to the Head - simply because I know of old that as someone mentioned, this is simply a far reaching attitude within the school and no amount of complaining to her will change anything  And I don't feel that its worth going higher, really.... Though I totally understand that some of you would disagree, of course - on principle, i am with you - but he only has until the Summer at this school and they really are the type to hold grudges I believe (much as I am sure some posters will say this sounds silly!)
My son said earlier that he didn't care if they have been on holidays abroad, but said that he would like to go abroad soon - He fancies Italy apparently lol - because he liked doing about the Romans at school :A Time to get saving, I suppose....!Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?0 -
Hi,
I'm sorry I haven't read the whole of the thread but just to let you know having holidays in the UK is nothing to hold your LO back. My first trip to somewhere outside of the UK was when I was 15 and went on a school trip to spain. I didn't even get a passport until I was 16. all of my childhood holidays were either to centre parcs, butlins or to visit some family in scotland. My mum doesn't like flying.
My 16 year old brother has just got his first passport, he hasnt been anywhere abroad (except across the boarder to scotland :rotfl:)
Since uni I went travelling I have been to more counties than some of my friends who go to the same place each year and sit by the pool!!
xxThanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada  :dance:0 -
This is a shocking attitude from the teacher. There is nothing to learn from sitting by a pool or on a beach in Benidorm for 2 weeks.
We asked our daughter where she would like to go on holiday, she asked for a camping holiday. Our tent is probably the best purchase we have ever made, and camping is so cheap to just go anywhere. I would say she learnt more camping in devon for a week than going to a tourist commercialised resort abroad.0 -
Having read the last few pages on this thread, I have come to the conclusion that Tbeckett is the teacher in question. :rotfl:
I have never known such a teacher with such a disgusting and bizarre attitude, as that teacher has. I would defo be talking to the head.
Many people have not taken their kids abroad by 10. Some people have 2 or more kids, (maybe at least one younger,) and a holiday abroad would cost quite a bit, and be a bit of a hassle.
Also, Tbeckett says his kid has been to 'this country and that country' but at SIX, the kid isn't going to remember much is he/she?! How pointless and silly.
Far better to go on trips within this country for simplicity and cheapness (£19 travelodge rooms!) and then leave going abroad for their teens.
Never heard the likes of it. The teacher is a silly old moo!0 -

When I was in primary school, probs year 4, many many many moons ago, we were asked to bring something in from overseas and talk about it.
I ignored the koala bear and the boomerang and the digeridoo and the aboriginal art my parents brought back when then lived in Australia and took in a little shell covered box (you know the sort, widely available from any seaside resort) with Babbacombe Bay written on it, I was thoroughly convinced that it came from a tropical island paradise and made up a whole back story to go with it.
It took me a good few years to realise why the teachers were trying not to laugh. :rotfl:Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
OP
I can understand you not wanting to get the Head involved BUT just keep an eye on the situation.
She's obviously a cow of the highest order and as such I wouldn't mind betting that she will try and belittle your son writing about South Devon rather than some over priced destination in Europe
She may not of course but there again a leopard rarely changes their spots0 -

My work often takes me into schools. Recently, visiting a primary, the teaching staff were arriving, you should have seen the way they were dressed, all wearing what appeared to be v. expensive clothes, shoes and hand bags. An individual commented to me its like a bloody fashion parade. They all appeared in competition with each other.
The car park was full of BMW's and range rovers. This was a primary school in a deprived area facing constant council cut-backs.
A world away from the kids they are teaching.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0
