I don't feel like I achieved much this weekend, apart from the usual chores. I'm very tempted to go home and be a slob tonight, it's been a boring day at work and my brain has gone into standby.

However, I'm going to plan meals and sort shopping list ready for the weekend. I intend to try a few new recipes out next week, I'm a real you-know-what for cooking the same dishes over and over and over again, it's time to expand my repertoire once more.

I spent the weekend @ my son's - which made for a fantastic mother's day! :-) but in connection with someone whom he has helped out time and time again he said 'X is completely mad - its the definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over again and expecting the same result'

Without wishing to offend anyone on here - is this not exactly what we are battling against here? Trying, each of us, to stop ourselves doing the same thing again? OK so just by being on here we recognise that we really should not do the same thing again because we know it will give us the same unpleasant, result. We are all very brave on here - trying to break the unhelpful patterns built up over many years. Well done us!

Lynplatinum, you are absolutely right. We are repeating the same patterns that serve us so badly.

I think that trying to break those patterns is really hard and we will make mistakes along the way, but even a small step forward is a win.

I've been struggling over the last few days. I make a good start, then try to take on too much, fail and then beat myself up.

However - after a wasted day yesterday I went to my Slimming World weigh-in and had lost two pounds. I felt much better immediately.

Today I am planning to do a bit more cleaning/tidying, a walk to the shops, some paperwork and some sewing or ironing this evening. I also need to make a hair appointment.

  • I totally lost my way yesterday - I walked to the shop, bought cake and ate it (all of it) then wallowed in self-pity and self-loathing for the rest of the day.

I think I will have to go back to having groceries delivered.

Summerlady, sometimes cake is the answer, don't care what the question is, it's your bodies way of getting you to take notice of it, so next time buy a bun and do a d.i.y facial or manicure.hth

The trick, summerlady, is to find your way back when you get lost. We all have little blips.

Feeling quite pleased today as I've lost 2lbs this week :) but also feeling quite deflated as I've actually been rather lazy, especially in the evenings, so don't actually understand why I've lost any - if that makes sense?

On the plus side I'm hoping if, no when I force myself to be more active during the coming week, I'll lose even more :D

Hi All - just come across this thread. Can I join please?
I used to be very organised when working full time but now I'm retired I think I'm in standby mode! My grandmother used to say 'The road to hell is paved with good intentions' and now I know what she meant. I too can spend too much time on my PC or reading a book & DH says I have a butterfly brain!
I've made some headway by having a 'to do' list. Its not in any order of priority - just the jobs I need to do & I try to cross off at least three every day - managed to do them all today & it does give me a sense of satisfaction.
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle
  • Well done His Missus - 2lb loss is great.

Welcome to boultdj and silvasava - we are just doing the best we can on any day and taking baby steps to make changes.

I've been reading some self-help books lately (kindle unlimited so I don't pay extra) and there were a couple that talked about changing habits by using mini habits - for example one writer wanted to form an exercising habit, so he gave himself the requirement to do one push-up a day.

He could do many more than one if he had the time or inclination, but he didn't ever change the baseline from one push-up a day. He often did much more, but always achieved the one and eventually this became a habit - he was an exerciser in his head.

The idea I think is that good habits take a while to form, but can eventually push out bad habits.

One of the writers did this for three mini-habits at a time.

I have decided to try this:
I will drink water every day - just a small glass, once a day.
I will do two stitches of my embroidery every day.
I will do one of my pilates exercises every day at home.

  • As well as finishing my habit book I actually managed to achieve a few things yesterday.

I did some shopping for a friend who is ill at the moment, and picked up a couple of store-cupboard bargains for myself too.

I walked about two miles delivering leaflets about a community event.

I finished cleaning and clearing all the stuff I had previously dumped in the kitchen, just because it didn't have a place. I hope it will make cleaning easier now.

Cleaned and cleared my bathroom cupboards.

Made an inventory of my cleaning materials.

Kon-Marie'd my tights (sort of) and put away my socks in my Kon-marie'd sock drawer. (I don't think I will run out of socks any time in the next decade - but I am going to be thrifty and wear them out).

Today I am going to sort out a filing cabinet containing a jumble of papers from various committees - lately I have just been throwing things in so it needs a good sort out.

I have some ironing to do, need to find some crafting materials for a school group (buried under piles of stuff). I'm working this afternoon so when I come back I will do my meal plans and some batch cooking.

I will drink my water, stitch my embroidery and do my pilates exercise then shower and moisturise and bed.

Ho silvasava - one of the habits most people want to develop is to read more - you have already succeeded at that one.

I also spend time on my computer - but I don't spend the whole day checking facebook or this site on my phone so it sort of evens out.

I have to-do lists - I love being able to cross things off. One of the books I downloaded talked about having 4 separate to-do lists which I thought was a bit excessive. I would spend all day writing them.
