Sorry about the long response but I’ve also just been ripped off by this guy to the tune of £797 …….I feel so STUPID!! I also feel so angry!
Background
Back in 2013 I placed a ‘Wanted’ ad in an online magazine/website for some rare parts for my long term restoration project.
Friday 28th August 2015 I had a message on my answerphone from ‘Simon’ saying he had the parts I needed and also some chromework for my classic car. He left his number and asked me to phone him.
Saturday 29th August (morning) I phoned ‘Simon’. No reply but I left a message to say I was interested in the parts.
That afternoon he rang back and he told me the following- He had all the parts I wanted, plus a complete set of newly chromed exterior parts and a stainless steel exhaust.
- He was aged 67 (re-listening to his message he sounds a little younger) and didn’t do computers but his grandson had found my advert online.
- The car had belonged to his father (aged 94?) who was in a home and who had been a club member for many years.
- He couldn’t believe how expensive these retirement homes were. (For that money he’d be living in a posh hotel with topless waitresses).
- Someone had already bought the shell from the car but wasn’t interested in the other parts.
- He needed to clear the parts and sell them to pay for his father’s care.
`
He then asked if I could collect ‘today’ because the parts were in his front garden (no back gardens in Seaview Terrace in St Ives) and there were some gipsies hanging around so he wouldn’t get to sleep that night for fear they might be stolen. It was already 3.45 pm so there was no way I could drive 325 miles to St Ives. He told me he’d guessed that would be the case and so he’d already got a carrier quote for collection this evening and delivery anywhere in the UK for £47.00. He also said he was going on holiday on Tuesday and a courier needed to be arranged before the bank holiday weekend. He then gave his full address and told me his surname was Jones. He also took my address and asked for my mobile number and for any special instructions for the carrier.
I fell for it hook, line & sinker. Thinking he was almost a fellow enthusiast I believed him when he told me, “I don’t understand this Paypalbusiness and don’t do cheques (which take too long to clear)”.
I paid £797 into his account (Lloyds Bank - Sort code 309238 & account number 50071860) and as soon as I pressed the ‘confirm’ tab I immediately felt I shouldn’t have done so.
He called me back to say he had some more parts if I was interested, at another £250 including delivery. I told him I hadn’t enough cash to buy anything else.
Sunday 30th August- I telephoned ‘Simon Jones’ to ask for a tracking number. (He doesn’t answer but calls back….. is this to check his list to see which false name he’s used??). He called back & told me the pallet hadn’t been collected on Saturday as arranged because there wasn’t enough room on the carrier’s van. It would, however, be collected on Tuesday after the bank holiday and he would call me to give me the tracking details then. Carriers would be Palletways.
- By now I was pretty sure I’d been scammed so I went online to try and find details of a BT landline number with his name & address. None was available so I telephoned a guest house a few doors down and asked if they knew their neighbours. It turned out that others had been calling them for the same reason. They advised me to contact the police.
- I contacted my bank’s Fraud team. “Sorry sir the cash has left your account (I knew this but was hoping it could be intercepted because it came up online that it wouldn’t reach recipients account until 1st Sept). Try Lloyds Fraud team.”
- Lloyds Fraud team.…”Really you need to call the Scam team. They’re on holiday until after the bank holiday. I suppose I could put a note against the account which should flag up if he attempts to transfer cash out ……”
- Northants police “Sorry mate, not our problem! I’ll put you through to Action Fraud…….”
- Action Fraud “Sorry this office is closed until Tuesday 1st September.”
- Email to Palletways (Reply early Tues morning “We have no details about collection from, or delivery to these addresses.”)
- Phoned 2 others who’d placed ‘Wanted’ ads in the same magazine as me back in 2013. Both had been approached by this guy offering them parts but neither had bought from him. Both very willing to help with police enquiries.
- Phoned Northants Police again, this time to ask for an incident number, and was reluctantly put through. At last I felt I was getting somewhere when Wendy carefully took down all my details & information, gave me an incident number and promised someone would call me back. The call came and it was arranged that the Police would visit me at home at 9.00 am on Wednesday 2nd Sept to take more details.
- I sent a text to ‘Simon’ to say I’d be on the road all day on Tuesday so would call him on Wednesday morning (when the police were going to be at my home) to get tracking details.
- Phoned Lloyds Scam team . “Yes we already have a note about this against our customer’s account. We don’t need a police incident number thankyou. You’ll need to contact your own bank to see if any money can be repaid to you”
- My bank. “You need to contact Lloyds and no, we don’t need a police incident number thankyou.”
- 9.00 a.m. ……..no police
- 9.15 a.m …. “Hello I’m sorry I’m not with you, I’m still at the station. Can we discuss this over the ‘phone instead of paying you a visit? Oh you have some evidence? Well to be honest there’s no point in our coming because we wouldn’t be investigating it anyway, since we’ve no idea where the crime was committed. The people you need to talk to are Action Fraud…”
- Phoned Action Fraud. He tried to sound interested……”So you were selling a car online?...No? You were buying a car online? No? What’s your date of birth? Etc. No I have all the information I need thanks. I don’t need any more just now. No I don’t need a police incident number but here’s our reference number and a password. We’ll be in touch within 28 days. Would you like some counselling?”
NO I DON’T WANT COUNSELLING….I JUST WANT SOME FLIPPIN’ ACTION!
So what next? I have this fraudster’s voice on my answerphone. I have his mobile number. I have his bank account number. I have two others who have been approached by him (and they are the only two I called). I have the phone number of his supposed neighbours. I even have a hunch who he might be. If the police had turned up as promised I’d have even more evidence about him. From my research I’ve a feeling I might even have the registration number of his classic car. Nobody’s interested.
I know I was stupid to be so easily drawn in but ………….Nobody seems to want to help, yet I reckon he’s the same bloke who’s defrauded many of the people who’ve already written on this thread. He needs to be behind bars.
HELP!

It is so easy for these fraudsters to open false bank accounts. Just look at the Lloyds website. Even with my limited skills, if I so wished I could come up with a couple of fake documents which would appear real enough to open a false account. It appears there's no check that the utility bills are genuine, no need for photographic identity and when the authorities do eventually discover it's being used for fraud the account is just closed down and a new one opened.0
