I have at last had my new tax code had to phone up to do it, applied when it first came on to this site
  • Just had my partner sign up for it online, the whole process was done in under 10 mins, 5 mins spent looking for bank card. The website asked for both of our details, and then dpne. I suppose now I just wait for a letter?

Im the main earner in our household whilst my partner minds the baby for now, I suppose for the time spent bringing up our child (1.5yr) she hasn't been working and only gets child allowance.

Im still in limbo as to what exactly happens when both of us are working? not really much info on that unless I have overlooked something.

Thank you MSE - I have completed the form is less than 10 minutes as per ibby7 - 5 minutes looking for a P60 - but I am a little confused - why would you be asked for a bank card?

I certainly wasn't ... I was asked for my date of birth and how much my P60 quoted as being paid in 2014-15... that's all
Here is the gist of my reply from HMRC so I am assuming it is all set up and will be activated with no further intervention by me.

Thanks for using the new Marriage Allowance service. Your transfer was successful.

We’ll reduce your personal allowance by £1,060 and increase your spouse or civil partner’s allowance by the same amount. This will apply for the current tax year and will continue into future tax years.

If your spouse or civil partner usually completes a Self Assessment return, we’ll write to them to confirm the transfer.

If they’re employed and pay tax via PAYE, we’ll send them a revised notice of tax coding by post in due course.

There is no need to contact us.

Bank account number was one of the options I was given to confirm my identity.

As I did not have my P60 to hand I used the bank account number.
  • So, (retired) 'er indoors made initial contact on 17 April and got standard "you'll be one of the first to invited" emails. The link came through on 10 June and was able to be completed easily enough. On 12 June an email landed saying that her tax allowance is being reduced by 10% and mine'll rise by the same.

As I'm on PAYE, HMRC'll let my employer know but as of yet, no change in my code though the wife's code has changed on her monthly private pension.

Any feedback would be welcomed on how long it should be before my code changes or a contact email for HMRC on this subject...

    Thanks
  • Couples who are not married or in a civil partnership again get seen off. I have been living with my partner for 25 years. Does this not count for anything!!

No, because it's for married people or people in a civil partnership.

If you want to shift part of your tax allowance, best thing to do is make an appointment down at the registry office. It doesn't have to be a big thing - just the two of you and the witnesses, job done.

  • WOT???

My wife and I were one of the lucky ones and got ours all sorted very early on, new coding received and everything hunky-dory, for months.

    HOWEVER....

Received a letter this morning from HMRC saying my wife has applied to transfer her tax-free allowance to you (I know!) and that the savings will be applied when I file my self-assessment return. (Huh? Haven't done one of those for years, since soon after retirement.)

Do I just ignore, as it's all happening satisfactorily?

Anyone else had one? Can't believe it's just me...

So have I. I will ring HMRC when I have a spare lifetime.
Don't think we should ignore it.
  • Just had an identical advice, don't know wether or not I should ignore, or worry.
