Yep, my husband got that letter this morning saying he will get the releif when he submits his SA return.

Not only does he not submit one but he already has the allowance in his code number and has had for several months.

After applying for the transfer successfully I recieved three further offers, with links to security process, to transfer the allowance.
  • Hi, I have been recieving the Marriage allowance for some time now and today I too have had a letter from HMRC.
It states that my partner has applied to transfer some of her tax allowance to me.
It goes on, "The tax saving will be applied when you fill in your self assessment return"

I am really confused about this.
Should I ignore this letter or do I really have to fill in an SA form.
I was under the impression that once the transfer had taken place there was no further action required until there was a change of circumstances.
Can anyone give me some help with this please.

    Regards

    Pete
  • Hi, my hubby got the letter this morning too, not sure what to do. Seems strange that it wasn't mentioned before and he has never had to fill in a self assessment form. Anyone any ideas why.

    Count me in too.

I have had the allowance since July along with an amended PAYE code, and received the same letter.

I have always been on PAYE never filled in a SA return.

I don't intend to ring HMRC and waste my time ( having watched the news about HMRCs performance or indeed lack of) I will just wait and see if I get a change of coding notice if not then wait until next years notice arrives and see if the allowance is carried forward.

My guess is it is yet another glitch in HMRCs systems which hopefully they will spot and rectify in due course. LOL

I got one of these and would like some further clarification.
  • Just had an identical advice, don't know wether or not I should ignore, or worry.

I got one too! Let's hope we get some answers soon.

Don't ignore it folks. If you are now classified for SA and you don't do one, you will be fined.
I tried this afternoon but had to give up after waiting 40 minutes.
Probably a mistake but don't rely on it.
  • Post 138 on the other thread appears to confirm some letters were sent in error
