Hi,

I've searched this thread and not been able to find what I'm looking for so apologies if it has been asked already and I've just missed it...

Can anyone tell me of a particular chain of opticians that offer (and the prices) contact lense check-ups to non customers? Are independent opticians more likely to offer this?

I've been buying my own lenses for a few years now and am overdue a contact lense check-up.

Pretty much all opticians will do this, but prices vary, you need to call your local ones and ask how much it it for a contact lens check up if you do not purchase any lenses from them

whats the cheapest type of contact lenses to use?

i've been using continuous wear lenses for a few years. originally it was focus night and day which changed to air optix. these offer 30 days and nights continuous wear. i've found the cheapest i could get the continuous wear lenses was about £12 a month online.

after a visit to the optician and commenting that my lenses sometimes become irritable and i sometimes throw a lense away before the month is over she suggested trying a different brand. these were acuvue oasys which are weekly continuous wear, the theory was replacing them weekly might stop the lense drying out and becoming irritable.

however, i have found these lenses worse, they seem to be more flimsy and prone to losing shape. they also are worse in the mornings when my eyes are dry, the air optix lenses didnt have this problem in the mornings. i know the weathers been hotter which doesnt help with dry lenses but considering its only been just over a week and ive used 7 / 8 of my monthly lenses i know something is wrong.

so im wondering whether to either go back to the air optix lenses or try a different type, perhaps the daily disposable ones? just wondered what is best value and if anyone can recommend a specific lense which is more reliable, better for dry eyes and doesnt lose its shape as easily??

can someone recommend a good place to get soft contact lense solution for the best possible price?

Im on monthlies with specsavers but the solution just never lasts long enough.

All the high street places charge exactly the same (from what I've seen).

Need a rant... am fuming with Vision Express at the moment... for the second time they have failed to send me the lenses before I run out of my current supply. :mad:

Have been with them for the first year just so I can have my eyes checked and see if my eye are all ok but now I'm ready to swap... they all seem nice enough on the phone but i useless and doing what they say they are going to do.

Will give this thread a read to see of good online places.

hello, i'm not sure if this is the correct board to ask on but what the hell! i just got a free check up and free contact lens fitting with D&A. they gave me my general prescription but not my contact lens prescription. Anyone know if i have a right to the latter? i emphasise that i got both free.

I ususally get my lenses from secondsightonline.co.uk - I have a different prescription for each eye. Does anyone know if its possible just to order lenses for one eye? (I have loads of lenses left for my left eye - I go thru more on right eye because if I`m going to get anything in my eye or if I trash or drop the lense when putting it in you can guarantee its always the right eye, so of course I have used a lot more of these).

I`ve never tried, just wondered if anyone has ordered just one `eye`.

I don't know if it's a D&A thing or an 'official thing' but I don't think they give you a copy of your prescription until you've had your lenses made, checked & sent for adjustments if needed. It may vary between different types of lenses, but that's what happened with me.

On the subject of cheap lenses, could I recommend that people consider gas permeable? I've just got a new set (think they cost about £150 all in, with checks & stuff) to replace my last 2 pairs which were 5 and 10 years old.

I've tried soft lenses and did not get on with them, so went back to the GP ones - I'm very short sighted (-8.5, -11.5) and have astigmatisms and have had no problem with them.

Thanks NickyDee, I know most sites allow you to order for each eye, just wasn`t sure they would only let you order one eye!
