Contact Lens Cost Cutting article discussion

I think you will find that will come in due course. No doubt there will be a test case when someone does have a complication wearing Daysoft. Not necessarily because of the lenses themselves, but once Daysoft do an 'exchange' or refit as it is commonly called, they will have taken on the legal responsibility.Beware the character seeking personal gain masquerading as a moral crusader.

Awaited with interest.0 -
As I understand it, the GOC can only act if a member of the public makes a complaint, not a member of the profession. This will probably happen eventually when someone is "refit" to a daysoft lens without supervision and has a bad enough experience to make a complaint.0

Am I going to be told off for this comment. I've stumbled across this thread by accident.
I wear daily disposable contact lenses. Only I do not change them daily. The pair I have in at the moment I have been wearing for nearly two weeks. I pop them in and when they become uncomfortable or repeatedly fall out I change them.
Now that is mse. I can't remember how long ago I bought them but they cost me £30 for a month. I bought 3month supply gosh possibly 4years ago and still have an loads left.
Thinking on that do contact lenses have a use by date. I'll have to check later. When I was given this prescription my eyesight had actually improved from the last time.0 -
I don't know this for sure I can only guess that people would tell me no "they are daily for a reason"
What possible damage am I doing to my eyes that putting a new lens in everyday wouldn't cause? Show me how I am putting "the health of my eyes at risk".
Your link just "recommends" that I see someone for aftercare and it states how easy and great daily lenses are and that they should not be slept in.
It does not say why they shouldn't be slept in?0 -

They shouldn't be slept in as they restrict the flow of oxygen to the eye and eyes need some time away from them. I am not sure of exactly what the maximum daily wear should be though, or if it can be clearly defined. I've read some advertised as comfortable from morning to night, or words to that effect. Maybe it's variable? I am really unsure and would value some information too.
As for the other part of your question, well if you have your eyes checked you can find out how healthy they are. Come back and let us know.0 -

If a lens is sold as a daily disposible, then that is how it has been developed, tested and approved for sale as a daily disposible. It has not been developed, tested and approved for re-use or for sleeping in, meaning mainly that it does demonstate the durabilty and deposit resistance necessary for re-use, or the high oxygen transmission required for overnight wear. Just because you have got away without infections or the lens falling to pieces in your eye does not mean you alway will. You rolling the dice with each re-use or sleep.
Would you re-use a disposible paper plate?
Would you re use a disposible toilet cleaning wipe?
What about a condom?
You may be saving a little cash but you are risking your health here. Please be more sensible.0 -

Your questions have no relation to me wearing a disposable contact lens.
But here goes
A paper plate ~ Yes if I was the only one to have eaten from it and touched it.
I reuse my toilet cleaning cloth everyday at home although it is not disposable.
A condom is not just used by me it is used touched by someone else so therefore No.
My contact lens is sealed in a pot. I open it and put it on my clean finger. I then insert it into my eye. Never is it touched again by me or anyone until it starts to irritate and then it is changed. I wash my face but nothing else goes anywhere else near my eyes. I don't wear makeup or put eye creams on.
The only germs to touch my contact lens are the ones floating in the air. And they would do that anyway contacts, or not, daily or not.
If the contact fell to pieces in my eye. It would irritate me. My eye would then start to water and the pieces would fall out. SO no problem there. It can not disappear around my eye socket and float around my head. Just the same as if an eyelash went into my eye. It would get flushed out.
I am of no greater risk of getting an eye infection than any other contact wearer or anyone that has eyes. Because my eyes are not touched by anything apart from by the air.
Just because something has not been tested and approved does not mean that it can not be used for a different purpose.
How many people years ago started growing flowers in Belfast sinks!!!!
Lets face it, a contact lens company is not going to see if they can produce a product that would only have to be bought once or possibly once every eye test. Are they!
As for damaging my health. I do not see how?
I do run the risk of wearing the wrong strength of lens due to not having a eye exam for 4 years. But I think I would've noticed a difference in my sight if there was a dramatic change in my eyesight.
I will try and dig out my prescription and post it on here. Then as Treliac advised I will get another exam done and will post the outcome.
If everything is fine I will continue to do as I have. If only prescription changes then still I will continue to do as I am doing.
If something shows up that could only be caused by my actions and not old age and the fact I already have bad eyes. I will admit that I have acted stupidly.0 -
The questions I posed were rhetorical, as you well know, to illustate other single use disposible items that most of us would not re use.
FACT: by re-using daily disposibles and/or sleeping in them you are at a significantly higher risk of complications than the person who uses them properly. This has been proven many times over. Just because you have not had problems so far does not mean you wont. Some complications are sight threatening - this is serious advise.
Feel free to take the risk however. Havng seen what I've seen, I would never do as you do.
I will not be replying again if you insist on having the last word. Best of luck with those complications.0
