  • I got hit by this! Didn't notice the small print back in November. I am very thick, for a physics postgrad. I also wear a tinfoil hat when the need arises. Anyhow, I noticed that the money had been taken 3 months previously, so I rang 0800 496 2454 and got a refund within 2 minutes even though I had been using Prime services. I asked the lovely lady if she'd been taking lots of calls for refunds recently and she agreed. So I guess Amazon realise that their "offer" could possibly have been a little clearer. This humility makes their tax-dodging perfectly justifiable then! I have learnt my lesson, and bow to the superior intellects on this forum......I need to go and do a degree in sarcasm now as my skills are wearing thin.......
  • READ THE SMALL PRINT!!
Surely everyone should know by now, after squillions of TV programmes and articles and publicity, that you have to read everything about something like this? Yes the button may be small or the bit about taking money after the months free trial may be a way down the page but surely we're on our guard now?
Amazon is brilliant and Amazon Prime is worth every penny of the £79 fee

And no, I don't work for them!
  • My elderly mother who was confused at the time due to illness clicked for Prime in error. When I found this out I contacted Amazon, explained, and they refunded immediately. They also helped me close her account (with her agreement). I have no worries with Amazon (except the tax issue, but that's separate), and have always found them helpful and informative, both in the UK and France.

You are indeed very thick. You read the MSE article and ended up getting your money back. How stupid of you!

You should have read all the wise rants in this thread and berated yourself for your stupidity and accepted that Amazon deserved to keep your £79. You stupidly ended up getting your money back.

I hope you've learnt your lesson.
  • Hi. I was caught out with the free trial. It was only when I received my bank statement in January I realised why I had gone overdrawn while trying to withdraw cash from the cash machine. I went on live chat to Amazon, told them I didn't want the membership and was refunded the next day.
  • Just around Christmas time 2014 I was shopping as I regularly do and went through the check-out proceedure. The next thing I realised was that I had clicked on the sign for the "Prime" free trial. There was no way I could back-track and undo what had happened and I got the free trial for 30days. I immediately went into my account and cancelled the "Prime" option and I was never charged the annual fee, but I was furious that I had fallen into othe trap and clicked the wrong button.

I got that free credit card sized thingy and waited about two months then signed up for the month long trial round Christmas. Forgot to kill it, but then thought 'hey, only a month!'. No.

If they would charge monthly, like everyone else on the planet seems to, I wouldn't mind. I did not know it was an annual up-front charge.

Obviously I now have it for the year, and have to say it seems OK so far. So I tell friends to sign up for the free month but make really sure to cancel before the deadline if you find it is not for you, as it is not clear at all you'll be charged for the full year if no one has warned you beforehand.

I would say read the small print, but in this case it wasn't very small, it was kind of normal size in the middle of the screen, I know this I have managed to successfully avoid taking the trial many times by just... you know... reading what is in front of me,
