I guess if MSE did an article on how to clean a red wine stain from the carpet you'd get the usual sanctimonious brigade with rants like "it's your own stupid fault if you spilt your drink" etc.

The article doesn't mention "compensation". No-one replying in this thread is demanding "compensation". They just want to be able to correct their mistake. Getting your money back for something you never wanted is not "compensation". Any more than if you buy a pair of jeans the wrong size and take it back to the shop for your money back. That's known in the trade as a "refund". Even if someone was so stupid as to have made a mistake it's still a "refund", not "compensation".
I'm sorry for the interruption though, carry on venting - that's what this board is for. Don't let facts get in the way.0 -
I signed up for the trial in December. I was given full notice that if I didn't cancel within 30 days that £79 would be auto debited. I was so impressed I bought an amazon fire tv box and it's money well spent hardly watch my virgin tv now plan to cancel that when contract is up. Amazon have great customer service never found fault in them.0

I have a 3 month Prime trial, expires in March. It was sent unsolicited.
I used Amazon to make a purchase recently but DID NOT choose to use Prime even with my 'trial' offer.
In spite of this I see my bank account has been debited with £79.
On further investigation it seems I was signed up to a 1 month trial, without my choosing it and as that had expired they had made the charge for the following year IN SPITE OF HAVING A 3 MONTH TRIAL STILL IN FORCE!!!! :mad:
Thanks to the instructions on here I have now had confirmation my 'trial' (but which one ??) has been cancelled and the money will be refunded.

Hi I just received your latest weekly MSE email and read with interest the item on Amazon prime. As stated in your information I have been charged the full £79 after the free trial without realising.
I followed your instructions and was sent an email stating that as I haven't used prime I shall receive a refund of £79, this is fab news as I wouldn't use the facility Amazon offers.
Again thank you so glad I receive your weekly emails there is always some item that is worth using or forwarding onto friends and family for info.
I think it would help if Amazon just emailed a week / couple of days before renewal is due this would help consumers a lot.

"They" is obviously the consumer, so "their" is obviously referring to consumer too.
What is it with these people who don't read what's in front of them? Always someone else to blame, next they'll be wanting compensation for their stupidity etc etc0 -
I'm astounded (well not really) by the number of people who are quoted in the press (notably Giles Coren's Twitter crusade) as complaining that they've been paying this charge for years and had NO IDEA that they'd signed up to Prime.
Don't these people ever read their bank or credit card statements? If I saw a stray £79 debit on mine, I'd be on it like a shot.
Hardly surprising that credit card fraud is so rife these days.0 -
I can't understand why people are being caught out with this deal, in fact using the term 'caught out' is unfair to Amazon as it implies underhandedness on their part.
The truth in fact is quite different, it's made perfectly clear at the outset that after the free trial you will be charged for the service and are provided with the means to cancel your subscription, none of this is hidden in small print under t&c's.0 -

It's just as simple for you to make an entry in an online calender of any free trials etc and set the calender to send a reminder a few days before expiry of said subscription.
Why should Amazon have to send a reminder if you can't be bothered to remind yourself!!0
