If they've got one its in the main room by the cash machines.
It depends on the size of the branch. I live in London which obviously tends to get new technology earlier but I have seen the same machines in Birmingham, leeds and manchester in the last few months.
It depends where you live.
If you contact your bank they can tell you where your nearest one is.
You seem to be assuming everyone lives and shops in large cities.
The only local branch to me here in a reasonably sized town in the South East which has one is three miles away both from my home and either of my regular supermarkets. Most bank branches still don't have them.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Several times on this thread you have been far too abusive for what is essentially a community style forum. With zero evidence you have accused someone of lying without putting the slightest thought into the fact that, had you read what they posted correctly and considered the forum on which they posted, such a lie would be futile. You have offered nothing of substance or help and seem intent on showing yourself to be little but a troll.
Your claim of coinstar type machines in banks is incorrect. HSBC and certain other bank branches have a machine which you can pay into, but it does not count the coins, I live in Manchester so can safely assume it is a big enough city to compare your claim to. The bags of cash are removed by staff and checked on their scales, any which are incorrect have the amount adjusted in the account they were paid into.
As MSE members, our position is not, I believe, to judge on a fellow members honesty but to offer useful (and friendly!) advice and qualified assistance wherever we can. As you appear to have done neither you're not really offering anything, are you?
For the benefit of the OP, your first thing should be to check the machine for clearly visible notices that you much cash in any voucher within the timescale on the receipt, if it is not made clear (either missing completely, small lettering or positioned in such a way you could not REASONABLY be expected to notice it). If it fails on this, then write to the store manager saving a copy. If the store manager fails to address your complaint, then write to customer services at head office stating why you are not happy with the response form the store and enclose both the copy you made and also a copy of the reply. Recorded delivery may be advisable.
The HSBC in Manchester does count the coins. I have been to it many times (in St Anne's square). You pour the coins in and it is counted at every denomination. The money goes into a central pot in the machine and is not bagged up individually. There is no way that the staff can possibly associate the coins deposited in this machine to a random depositor. Your statement that they take bags of coins out of the machine to weigh is frankly ridiculous.0 -
Wijit - This sounds like the nightsafe type deposit facility rather than a coin counter and actually, it might be worth asking if I can use them, so thanks for that idea.
JReacher1 -I have established that SOME large branches of the High St banks have coin counting machines but most do not.
Given that most of us live in towns where banks are closing faster than pubs - the banks coin counting machines are unlikely to be coming to a high street near us anytime soon.
I am not a complete fool - I know that the % take of the coinstar machines seems like a rip off but given a choice between free parking and close to home supermarket facilities as opposed to traveling a 25 mile round trip to a much larger bank combined with the cost of parking in the city - to be fair, the 8% they take is still cost effective given that my local bank wont accept the coinage.
My OP was about what I believe to be an unreasonable penalty with insufficient warning of that penalty. 99 times out of a 100, users of the Coinstar machine cash their voucher immediately - on this one occasion, I didn't and I have clearly paid the price. My post was originally put on the 'vent' board to warn others.0 -
Why is it those that live in large cities seem to think that everyone has access to the facilities available to them. It would seem that the closest bank branch to me with a cash counting machine is 70 miles away which makes it a bit of an unrealistic option especially considering I do not bank with them. Coinstar machines are available in all my near towns making them a viable option.
Reminds me of when I lived in Germany 25 years ago - every bank branch - including the small ones had a coin counter, manually operated by the cashier. They dumped your bag of coins in and while it did its thing they got on serving someone else and called you back when it finished.0 -
This thread has cheered me up, I had no idea that York was a large City before today.
The HSBC in Parliament St York has two note counting machines and 1 coin counting machine (yes it does count the coins as the receipt shows what you've deposited) , which have been there for well over 5 years (could be 10)0 -

Actually the HSBC branch in Wrexham has (or had last time I went in there) a machine that automatically counted the coins you put in and credited your account straight away.
I may not be JReacher1's biggest fan but he is correct that some banks do have this type of machine0 -
This thread has gone slightly off track I posted on twitter see here https://twitter.com/apn1179/status/566491603502903296

I don't think there is a limit on coin counting machines in HSBC either, well I've put £800 ish in it, different coins too.0

In what coinage? I assume it was £1s or £2s. £1200 of 10ps, for example, would weigh almost 180lb.
Personally I use Coinstars for everything 20p or less. It's well worth it. To sort £50 of coins for the bank would take me a couple of hours, at least, so we're talking less than a couple of quid an hour for my work. No thanks!
I witnessed it too. It was a couple of weightlifters ;0)“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.”

More and more banks are rolling out coin deposit machines. As far as I'm aware Barclays are looking to make all their branches self service, this will mean all branches get coin machines as they get refurbished. Natwest/RBS are installing coin machines in all branches as they get refurbished, doesn't matter if it's a large town branch or a local. Metro is the only back that commits to having a coin counter in every branch, but of course they are only in the SE.
However every supermarket with a coin counter also has self scan tills. Most of these now are the kind where you can dump handfuls of coin at a time, unlike the old ones which only accept individual coins, so you can pay for your shopping in coin without taking forever entering each one individually.
I doubt the issue with coinstar having a cut off on vouchers is money laundering, as much as fraud. A coinstar voucher doesn't contain anywhere like the security features in a £10 note. They want them to be cashed in immediately as if they are taken off the premises it gives people time to study the security features to make counterfeit vouchers.0
