bit upset by MIL's careless comment

  • Was it just a joke though? As an ex-nurse whenever Husband is not well I always joke about 'No sympathy , have seen people with far worse in hospital' . I still look after them of course, I like to think maybe better than an unqualified person would but that's always open for debate LOL

Surely it is nothing more than that motherly protective instinct showing itself up when her baby is poorly?

I can understand your feeling, OP, but she was probably just careless in her choice of words.

Hubby is not well at the moment, he has a lung infection. MIL calls up and whilst chatting, asks "so is (me) looking after you, or are you having to look after yourself?"

I am a little upset at the implication that I wouldn't be looking after my sick husband.
It feels like there was always a question about whether I was capable, or indeed wanted to, look after him.

Would you be a little disgruntled by that comment too?

from this scenario/comment you feel this way, or have you always felt this way with your MIL?

I don't have a MIL, but I know my way of taking care of my husband/household/child is not the way my in-laws would do it - they've never said anything to me, and if they've said it to my husband he's had the good sense not to pass it on to me ;) - because at the end of the day, its nothing to do with them, and as long my husband and I are content with "our" way of living, thats all I need to be concerned with.
  • Reeling? I think you are totally overthinking it. It's just a phrase.

I think it stems from my sense of my own inadequacy really. I've always felt concerned that I wasn't good enough in many areas of my life, so have just taken MILs comment on board as a criticism

Standard (some types of) mother in law comment.

    Ignore and move on.

Why, in heaven's name, do you not just TELL her that you are miffed by her comment?

What can she do if you tell her that? Get it out in the open!
