I always wash towels and bedding at 6o or 90 degrees but I usually only wash bedding fortnightly because, as a family, we have always showered before bed. Beds are always aired every day and I change the pillowcases at least twice weekly. I wash bedding more often during warm weather if we get sweaty overnight or if anyone is ill. I also trained my children never to get inside the bed wearing day clothing. Bouncing on the outside of the bed is allowed!
If you prefer to shower in the morning then I would imagine bed linen would need more frequent washing.
Bath towels are only washed weekly - as hopefully we are clean when using them! BUT I change all hand towels at least daily. Incidentally, and at the risk of grossing everyone out, it is not a good idea to hang towels in the bathroom near a WC unless you're OK with them being covered in both urine and faeces droplets; they travel a long way from the toilet bowl !
If I want to be absolutely certain my hands are clean e.g. before preparing food which is not going to be cooked at high temperature before being eaten such as a sandwich, then, after washing my hands thoroughly in hot soapy water, I dry them using disposable paper towel or a freshly laundered towel. Similarly if I've been handling anything particularly risky e.g raw chicken or clearing up vomit (or worse!), then I'll not only take extra care with handwashing but will dry hands using either disposable paper towel or a clean flannel, which then goes straight in the wash.
With regards to needing exposure to microbes to develop immunity, this is unavoidable outside the home, unless you live in a bubble.0 -
Can't say about a bra as my Man-boobs don't need support but as far as other things: Bedding:- I change the straw occasionally and I shower every Christmas whether I need to or not!:eek:0

I have 4-5 bras that I wear in rotation / depending on the outfit, and I wash each one probably 4 times a year. Yes, a year. I have not died yet. I didn't used to know that you could wash them in the delicate cycle in the washer, so got into the habit of infrequent hand-washing [of the bras] due to laziness. The delicate cycle bra technique has been a game-changer, though. I'll probably start washing them more often now, but certainly not every few days, come on guys.
Note: I'm a low-sweat person in day to day activities. I do wash my sports bra every few uses (1 use = 10-15 mins on the cross-trainer).
Edited to add: I boil our sheets and towels at 90 degrees to kill bacteria. I realise that this does not entirely jive with my bra strategy, but the human being is a house of contradictions.0 -
I wash my sheets weekly only really because I'm allergic to dust mites so they go in a high temp wash to kill them all.
Towels I usually use twice and then put in the wash but my dad uses his all week. I have a shower usually every other day and wash my hair as and when needed (between 2-4 days usually) and I find that this keeps my hair lush and my skin softer as I'm not removing all the natural stuff on my skin and hair all the time. I certainly don't smell and consider myself to have very good hygiene.
In terms of bras I wear it from 3 days to a week, I think the main think bras need washing because of the underarm bit so depends on if I've been hot or not really.
Normal clothes I usual wash when they get something split on them or use the sniff test, but I'm so clumsy that tops often don't get worn more than twice without me spilling. I don't like to over wash as if it is clean you just need to air it out in your wardrobe as you don't want to make your clothes faded really quickly. Obviously undies and socks everyday.0 -
Again an article that beggars belief! How did they think our immune systems survived over the years - because the wise havn't fallen for the marketing but exposed ourselves to make us fitter :jXX0

Do you mean the actual pillows and not the pillow cases? It's neevr entered my head to wash those. Do you just stick them in the washer?0 -
Do people ever wash their pillows and duvets? I like to do them every few weeks.
Do we think pillowcases need washing more frequently than other bedding?
Does anyone else wear bras for a week? - they don't smell or look dirty!
My pet hate is dishcloths which are not bleached daily!
Ditto sponge scourers etc. Anyone else do this or am i ott?
Flannels i wash every day but towels only twice a month or when they smell or get make-up on them?
I think jeans need washing after 3-4 days considering how hot we get in that personal area!?
When i was first married i changed every day but left all the washing till saturday. A colleague said this was disgusting. Was my routine disgusting?
I am interested in other people's perceptions.0 -

I changed them last week, as my wife had just got over a cold and we thought it good if her germs were removed.
Next time will be Easter I think.
Before I found out that my allergies were dust mites I would only wash bedding about this much too. We sit on our couches nearly as much (well in my house we do) and were not washing them all the time.
I can't believe some people was their coats so much. I never wash mine unless it's got dirt on it usually if it's been dropped on the floor outside or I've slipped or something. I do tend to wear clothes under my coat though so maybe that's why others wash theirs more often.0 -

I think many people think pillow cases need washing more often than the rest as we kind of see our faces as the most vulrpnerable to germs and things.
I agree with sponges, I buy cheap ones (about 20 for £1 from b&q) and throw away as soon as too mucky (usually after tomatoey tea or pastry making or greasy washing up). I'm not a fan of use and throw away with anything but this is the one thing I let myself do. I also clean the bathroom once a week and throw away that cloth used (Asda smartprice blue and white ones).
To the jeans I guess it depends how big your knickers are!0 -
All this washing must be why peoples clothes need replacing so often. I'd expect most garments to last at least ten years, but according to Gok Wan this in itself is shocking.0
