PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PEOPLE, do NOT wash towels after one use on a freshly washed body! We are trying to save our planet!!!! Producing electricity and water is too costly to ourselves and the eco-system, for you to just waste it like this???? Each to their own, of course, but after one use is totally unnecessary.0

Even the hotel we stayed in recently asks people to only put towels for washing if really needed and to put them back on the towel rail to re-use.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

I aim to wash my bedsheets every 2 weeks, but it's often closer to 3 weeks. They get washed more in summer as it's much easier to dry them outside then. The duvet cover gets changed every other time the sheets are changed. Pillowcases I might change between sheet changes as they tend to get dirtier than the actual sheets. If the sheets get a good airing every day then it doesn't matter much if they aren't getting changed for weeks, but it is nice to get into a freshly made bed on the occasion that it happens
Same with towels, they get washed more often in summer as I just don't have space/time to dry them every couple of days. After a shower you are as clean as you're gonna get, the towel isn't going to be filthy after one use!
Bras get worn maybe 4 or 5 times between washes, but they get aired out between wears and I might rotate a couple of bras for a few days rather then wear the same one each day. Washing really does wear out bras so I see it as extending their lifetime to wash them less!
Pants and socks are fresh every day.
Tops get worn a few times before washing. Even small stains might just get rubbed with a damp cloth to avoid washing the whole garment after one wear.
Jeans rarely get washed. I read an article once that said jeans shouldn't be washed at all in their first 6 months of use! And after that, only when they actually look dirty.
Washing powder companies do try to convince you that everything is dirty and needs washed all the time. I wonder why...
OH has suffered with itchy skin and the doctor advised him not to use soap or shower gels. He said it's better to shower in plain water than use those products, and showering every day can cause problems too. I'm fine with every other day for a shower. Most of us don't do dirty jobs, and our clothes protect us from most dirt we encounter. As long as your hands and private areas are clean, the rest of you will be fine for a few days without a wash!
Your description most closely resembles my own habits. As you say, companies/media etc have an interest in encouraging us to think we're dirty if we're not incessantly cleaning. Society has gone mad as a result them playing on our fears - people don't want to be regarded as 'dirty' and fear potentially being shunned. But it's ridiculous. As long as you don't smell, look presentable and are healthy, who really cares?0 -

With you on this one! In addition to the water and electricity, the chemicals are also not great for us or the planet.0 -

Completely agree with this. This is the one thing that I find hard to understand in this thread. We have a heated towel rail (OK, Winter use only!), and towels keep lovely and fresh for a week easily as they get aired after use. No-one here uses towels on anything except freshly washed bodies, hands or faces.
In my experience, pure cotton bedding does not need washing anything like as often as polycotton, which gets smelly very quickly.
As a family we all shower before bed - I was brought up in a hot country and I still find the English habit of going to bed dirty and only showering/bathing the following morning really rather repulsive. If I did that, I would want to change my sheets every day, just like my underwear.0 -
I feel simultaneously grubby and obsessive! Underwear, bras, tops, jumpers and cardigans and socks are washed after one wear. Trousers and skirts after two and jeans after three. Towels are washed at 95 degrees after three days. Our bedding is washed every fortnight, mainly because I have a dodgy shoulder which makes putting on the duvet cover difficukt. The teenaged daughter's is washed.... Not nearly often enough!! I no longer do it so it can be some weeks.
We shower every day, hair is washed daily (I have really greasy hair), so does the daughter. I use make up remover every day that I wear make up (Monday - Friday basically) but rarely wash my face.
We have antibacterial hand wash in the bathroom and kitchen and I use bleach in the loo every few days but it's honestly never occurred to me to to use antibacterial wipes on things like handbags, telephones and purses. I sort of sneakingly believe that a certain amount of germs are beneficial to the immune system, although would not want MRSA!0 -
I've just remembered one thing I clean that I know a lot of people forget to...makeup brushes. I've just washed mine now.
I probably wash mine every few weeks with antibacterial hand wash and water. I use them around 3 days a week.0 -
Wow...it's fascinating to see the widely different habits on here. I agree with those of you who think that advertising/marketing makes us believe we need to clean a lot more than previous generations. I firmly believe exposure to germs is a good thing to strengthen the immune system. As for anti-bac...I'm forced to use alcohol hand gel at work (in a hospital) countless times per day so I rebel against using anything anti-bac at home when I don't have to.
As for my washing habits... Similar to most... Wash knickers/socks/tights/work tops & dresses after 1 wear, bra /trousers/cardigans and jumpers which aren't next to my skin after 3-4 wears, towels once a week (and don't really see the need to wash more frequently if aired properly...I'm at my cleanest when im using them)
I'll probably be viewed as disgusting for my views on sheets though. I aim to wash them every 3-4 weeks but sometimes it's longer. I love getting into a bed made up of clean sheets but it's just so much hassle drying them on a wet day (I don't have a tumble dryer). I live by myself but I really don't think my sheets smell. I have a shower every morning so I reckon it doesn't matter if my sheets are left a bit longer than they should...I'm at my dirtiest when I'm in bed but ALWAYS have a shower in the morning before I put on my clean clothes and go out to face the world!!!0 -
I think there's people telling porkies on here.
I wash my bed sheets 3 times a year (im guessing coz I cant remember, as it happens so infrequently). PS ive only got one set of bed sheets (they get washed, left out to dry and put back on the bed all within the same day)
I change my pants twice a week
socks everyday (coz ive got athletes foot)
I never wash my jeans (stopped doing that over 20 years ago)
from time to time I wear the same shirt to work for 2 days continuously (3 days in the week if need be)
I do not wash on a Saturday or Sunday (unless im going out. and I don't mean going out to the supermarket, that dosent warrant me washing)0 -
I'm a war baby ( 1940-1955 ) no bathroom, only one cold tap in the house, in kitchen, and this was in WestLondon not the back of beyond, no electricity, four brothers, one sister, tin bath, which we all shared on a sunday night. When I read letters from people about how much washing and personal cleaning they do makes me shudder with disbelief. The only people that got as dirty as they must be were miners, and the only reason they had a shower every day was because it was free, at work. These "dirty" people must have money to burn and certainly no regard to the enviroment and global warming that will affect their future generations.
