  • I'm with you - I'm convinced that the continuous stressing about germs and using antibacterial this, that and the other is foolish in the long run.

How can people build up immunities to anything if living in a constantly sanitised environment?

IrishRose I absolutely agree with you and the OP, we change things much too often and so many fall for the all the hype put out by manufacturers and their advertising agencies. The only bit about your lifestyle that concerned me is the following -

    !

Is this a tradition in your part of Ireland, and do you change them for other kids, or something less sick or dirty?! :rotfl:

I get annoyed with people who use antibacterial/antiseptic products and the like. We're fighting to keep this world a safe place for our children and grandchildren, using these things is destroying our immune systems and the ecosystem. We're already fighting a losing battle against some illnesses because so many millions of antibiotics were prescribed before knowledge of the consequences, but we now know the dangers of using some household products yet the thoughtless still buy them daily. I fear for the future, my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and so on, and yours. I admire the posters who refuse to use these things and care about our small and fragile world.

Off my soapbox to await the bullets :p

:rotfl::rotfl: LOL I meant changing the Kids' socks and bedding :rotfl::rotfl: Although sometimes it would be tempting to change them for other kids:o esp when they are tired cranky and out shopping:mad::o:rotfl:

Nah just kidding, I wouldn't change my little darlings for the world, even if they do test my very last nerve at times.

Interesting reading, myself and DH have very different ideas when it comes to washing,

I will do beds weekly, twice weekly in summer he would do every other week

Pjs, undies, socks, shirts, tshirts daily he again every other day bar pants

Jeans, trousers and jumpers one wear air for a day or two then a second wear then wash, he will happily wear jeans 3/4 days in a row

Baby clothes regardless daily same with her sheets and sleeping bags, I use the baby cycle on my machine (60) last for just over 2 hours and always add a small amount of nappisan to the wash, she is 7 months and I have only had to throw 2 items of stained clothing away (and one of them hubby ruined)

Towels, t towels, bath mats, flannels and what not after each use, with bath towels we use 3 between 6 of us and one for the baby then they get washed.

My machine is on 2/3/4 times a day depending on what's built up, been worn etc washing is the most frustrating chore I do. Most is washed at 40 bedding and towels at 60 and once a half term the kids school shirts get a 90 wash with nappisan to keep them bright and white

  • I never dry clean anything either. Anything that's dry clean only such as suits, tweed jackets etc gets cleaned using the sponge and press method (wipe down with sponge, then press with a hot iron over a cloth. The steam sterilises and deodorises the cloth). This is the method tailors recommend - dry cleaning can actually be harmful to clothes.

  • Most bugs are gud for us, 2 much hygiene is bad and a waste of resources.
I change bedding once I see the bugs and fleas there and clean the bathroom about once every leap year. My white towels get washed when they turn brown.
I dont wear socks as the dog hairs stick to my sweaty feet and so I dont need them - they are warm enough. I always change underwear when it smells worse than toilet (or when it has walked out of bedroom on its own - whichever is sooner.)
I do take a quick shower EVERY month without fail and my hair I cut real short so I dont need to wash it ever.
I live with 4 dogs, 5 cats, 2 rabbits, a gerbil, a collection of rats, a donkey, goat and pig called "sunday dinner" and I also do indoor composting which saves me going outside to put the crap in. The house is clean enough for what I want and doesnt do me any harm - well apart from a few infections here and there which required some periods of hospitalisation in isolation wards but thats just bad luck innit. Cest la vie.

I'm exhausted just thinking about so much washing and cleaning!

I live by myself and do two loads of washing a week - one of clothes, one hotter one of bedding & towels.

I normally change the bedding once a week, although sometimes, particualrly if I have been away for a weekend it may go for two weeks, particualrly in winter when I wear more in bed!

Towels get changed once a week, (hand towels more often if I have visitors)

socks and knickers I wash after one wear, other things it depends - I tend to get changed as soon as I get in from work so I don't get cat hairs (or pulled threads from cat claws) on my smart work clothes, and I do think that washing two complete outfits, neither of which has been word for a full day, would be a bit much. I would not normally wear a shirt or bra more than twice without washing it, but it does depend on what I have been doing, what the weather is like etc.

Bedding is up to 4 weeks for us too.

When I was growing up, I had a rotation every 4 weeks. At the end of the 2nd week the sheet and pillowcase would be changed, the duvet would be turned over.

Now, it's the same sheet, pillowcase and duvet. More frequently in summer than the 4 week limit.

It's strange how some people will feel dirty leaving it that long but I don't. I'm not suggesting their standards are higher than mine as my bed could be as clean as a more frequent changer, but it's a good topic!

People must have their washing machines going on a daily basis!

Clothes - bottoms when they are dirty, tops when they smell. Shirts daily though as I don't want to build up any dirt on the collars as it's a ball ache to get off and they're nice shirts!

Towels - When it starts to smell a little bit. I shower every two days on average though so someone who showers once a day may need to wash theirs twice as soon.

I'm happy with the above as I don't mind a little germ here and there.

We use anti-bacterial surface cleaner and handwash (I bought 60 bottles in a bulk buy from eBay, we go through two a year!) but our cleaning isn't 5* standard. I would just call it "normal".

I wash bedding and stuff when the smell becomes intrusive, generally.

Clothes that we wear regularly I wash after one use. Trousers generally two to three wears.

Those of you that say 'I wash bedding every three weeks, towels twice a week, etc,' How do you keep track do you have a spreadsheet of when you last did stuff and when it is due again?
