Thank you everyone
I am feeling much better about it!
I do a lot of driving on the A50 - about 80% of my commute is this, so I will be going for a better quality tyre. I can afford it as I've made sure I had plenty of money saved to pay for things like this and my insurance.
I will be pressing them and making sure I don't get any work done without a second opinion. Luckily the appointment is at 8:30am so I have plenty of time to sort it!
Once again, thanks for the advice and suggestions. As someone who is relatively new to the world of motoring it's nice to know that I can come here and get help from (most) usersOur Rainbow Twins born 17th April 2016

Even an MOT advisory doesn't mean it needs doing now (or even at all), because advisories are entirely at the tester's discretion for things you might find useful to know - they can "advise" you that your tyres only have 4mm tread left if they want.
Gullible punters may then be persuaded to buy new tyres all round:
"Well, sir, the legal limit is 1.6mm but all experts - including the Germans (always mention the Germans, but never the war!) - recommend you have them changed at 3mm for safety and you're just 1mm away from that (hold thumb and forefinger up with a 1mm gap), so they'll really need doing soon. As it happens, we have a special offer at the moment......"0 -
An apology to the OP for being so rude would have been nice.
I'm afraid not. Cars are obviously expensive and complex pieces of machinery. They can also cause unthinkable harm and damage if they aren't maintained properly. If the OP was driving around on bald tyres because she can't properly measure the depth of the tyres from either a cursory glance or with a depth gauge, would her excuses pass muster with the Police if she fails to brake in time when someone walks out in front of her and she doesn't stop? How about if she writes her car off and the insurers fail to pay out because there were numerous mechanical defects with the car.
There are too many people driving around without a modicum of mechanical knowledge.0 -
This site will give you an idea of prices for tyres
http://rmtyresltd.co.uk/
One of the cheapest I've found and you can see difference between budget and branded ones. Might not be local to you but it gives a figure to be able to use for negotiation and to see if you're being ripped off.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
As a side thought, I tend to charge tyres in pairs as I don't drive the sort of wheels where a difference in grip between front & back would upset internal systems.
I also tend to get them at Costco who easily flatten my MOT garage on Michelin tyre prices & my garage has no qualms about me driving off to get new tyres, once they've swallowed that loss of profit...

Well, I measured my tyres using a 50p earlier and one of them just matches the ridge on the coin, two just go over the ridge and one is absolutely fine, so I'm guessing I'll need 1 to 3 new ones, but I'm totally okay with that as I know I drive so many miles. Our Rainbow Twins born 17th April 2016

The ridge on a 50p coin is less than 1mm, you were suggested to use a 20p coin on which the ridge is 2mm.
So one appears to be below the legal limit, and another two also appear to be the same. It's not OK.0
