How much can I expect to pay for 4 new tyres?

Rampant Recycler I've been Money Tipped!
Hi,

I have my MOT and service tomorrow (with Kwik Fit - I know, I 've already been told off for this!) and I am expecting to need new tyres. I've tried measuring them myself but still unsure. I bought the car in April 2014 and started using it once I passed my test in August and between then and now I've done just under 11k miles.

The previous MOT certificate runs out at the end of February, and it mentions an advisory on my front passenger side tyre, so I have two questions really:

1) how much can I expect to pay to have up to 4 tyres fitted?
2) what are my rights if I feel Kwik Fit are charging too much for the work?

I know the prices of individual tyres but I know there's fitting charges on top.

Look at the side of the tyre it should say something like 195 / 60 / 14 and a speed rating letter H or T and a load number 90 or 75.

Go to black circles. Com or tyreshopper.co.UK punch in your tyre size, undoubtedly they will be cheaper so print it off or show Kwik this on your phone/tablet/laptop and I have found that they price match.
  • I bought 4 tyres the other week, cost me £160.00.

I hope that helps you make a good comparison with your car.

Take a 20p piece and stick it in the tread in a few places, if you can see the raised edge on it you'll probably need new tyres.

The cost of tyres depends a lot on the size, which is written on the side in the form <width>/<profile>R<size> <load rating><speed rating>

For instance, mine are 225/40R17 94W, which are about £100 each for half decent brands. But they are low profile 17" wheels. The cost will be a lot less if you're on something like 14/15" wheels with a higher profile.
  • Anywhere between £160 - £1000+ depending on the type of tyres required. You need to give more details about the size of tyres and the make & model of car.

I had a quick search with the information you've provided

Estimate 1 was £682.35 including fitting/disposal/filling with helium and a complimentary full body massage from the fitter

Estimate 2 (Kwik Fit) was considerably more expensive and included none of the extras

    * on a serious note why not just ask Kwik Fit for their inclusive price and if you think you can get it cheaper then go somewhere else. Also bear in mind that if you order/pay for/book online with Kwik Fit it's generally cheaper

    Thanks all.

I booked my MOT and service online and have not found a way to cancel and go elsewhere. I've looked on their site and it looks about 50 quid per tyre. I've prepared myself to need 4.

As stated previously, if you have a look at the side of your tyre there will be the size and rating, this you can then enter onto various websites and it will give you a price. With some you can even enter your reg number and it will tell you what tyres you *probably* have on, but I would check this against your car before taking the price as gospel

On a side note, many many Years ago I used to work for a glaziers doing estimation and pricing and the amount of times we would get people ringing up and asking for a price for an average size window was unreal! Then they would get shirty with me when I refused to give them a price and asked them to measure the window and come back to me!

on another note though... if you had an advisory last year on tyres, I wouldn't have waited a year to get them done! you could be driving round with illegal tyres!

Plenty of mid range tyes under £50 each fitted for that on tyreshopper, Kwik-shït will say theres are better and try and bump you up in price.

155 65 r14 speed rate T seems to be the size.

As a car driver, you should make sure how legal/illegal your tyres are.

Penalty for driving with illegal tyres is 3 pts each plus fine plus conviction code, penalty for having an accident with illegal tyres could be a lot worse.
