That is really unfair IMO - and well done to him for not bowing to peer pressure and office politics

Unless I work with a friend, I would never give money to a colleague just because by default we share the same air at work.

I'm so with you on this one, not just because I don't want to contribute but also because a) it's a shamefull waste of money usually spent on tatt and b) I hate being the centre of attention so keep my birthday a secret :o

At my job before last we put the kibosh on birthday collections, my last job I was freelance long term and didn't feel I could rock the boat but, having seen a junior member only put in what she could afford, I just contributed a token 50p unless it was someone I was friends with.

Re the misers always being loaded, I agree that's why they're loaded. I wish I had been a bit more of a skinflint and then I might have more to show for nearly 40 years work! I don't agree obviously with cadging stuff off of other people but I wish I'd not always been so quick to put my hand in my pocket to buy the next round.

  • It can get overwhelming - I used to work at our local hospital and each shift there was someone (or two or three) collecting for someone's birthday or leaving present, selling something to raise money, someone's granddaughter's brownie group needing something, or the air ambulance raffle... it never stopped. There was a lot of pressure to give. Many of them were very worthy causes but had I given to all of them, I would have had very little of my pay left.

This was the exact same reason I stopped - at a previous job there were so many of us that there were several envelopes going round most weeks. There was a lot of pressure to give and if you donated less than a fiver to each if you were skint, it was frowned upon and there was lot of backbiting surrounding it - decided to opt out completely when I changed employment

Not sure why you think my comments are unfair?? Poster refuses to contribute to any work place collection so why should he accept any for him freely?

I know we are not all made of money, why would you think I am? I choose to contribute to any collecions as and when I can afford and dont just refuse to contribute to any out of hand as a matter of principal!

Your comments are not only unfair, they are ill informed too.

You are jumping to conclusions that I am not contributing to office whip arounds, but expect them to do it for me, which as above - is not the case. And then trying to use your ill informed conclusions to deflame me, and start an argument , not only with me - but anyone that will listen.

A person with (in your own words) ''compassion for fellow human beings'' does not jump to conclusions and start accusing people of whatever springs to mind... Oh dear, I do hope that Karma doesn't come to get you....

Yes its not my place and I didnt actually accuse them of being mean and tight, where did you read that?? I said they should not accept any collection for them when they refuse to contribute to others. Hmmm opinions differ

Try taking a wee bit of time to read more closely to what has been said. And not going by what you perceive has been said to fit in with your conscience

I buy for my friends kids every year, they don't buy for mine, they can't afford it, but I'm happy with that.

When I didn't have ant money I didn't contribute towards presses but if someone bought me one I would be grateful.

I agree what goes around comes around, but not in anything as trivial as not accepting a present.
At one point if I has loosened the purse strings I would have lost my home.
Never again will the wolf get so close to my door
