First. You are running windows8.1? Yes? Go back to the orignal "apps" screen (by either running Start -> Startscreen or selecting Windows key+D again I think).
Just start typing -> defender <- nothing needs to be selected. Does "Windows Defender" appear in a list!?!?!?0 -

Aaah windows defender is being monitored and protected apparently. Real time protection on and virus and spyware definitions created 138 days ago but there s a question mark instead of a bright green thing with a tick in like the real time protection has. And no scans performed.0 -

The option was a quick scan. Says scan completed on 115883 items and no threats were detected during this scan0 -
I should have asked you to ensure "virus and spyware definitions" are up-to-date. Were they upated automatically? (go to the update tab to ensure these are up to date). The option was a quick scan. Says scan completed on 115883 items and no threats were detected during this scan0 -

What do I need to do to get this classic shell pls0 -

Do you know what Classic Shell is ? It makes Windows8(and8.1) look a bit like Windows7 and boots to the (windows7) like desktop. If you're used to the (modern) apps screen you may not need this?

EDIT: conclusion: windows defender anti-virus is running (that's good); but when you try and install avast OR avg (or anything else!?!?) you get a black screen BUT you can get to the task manager by typing ctrl-alt-del ?0 -
