And thank bedsitbob for the Restart+Shift trick - where on earth did he find that!?

I'm not just a pretty face you know. ;)

Sorry for not being specific, re the "Restart" option. :o

I was working from memory, and should have been more careful how I phrased it.

"don't seem to be very good." What's up? I know you blamed Avast for your recent "issue". Did you have a problem with AVG too?

Better clarify. After your first refresh it was ok until you did what? And what are the symptoms again - you lose visibility of your desktop (it goes black?) until you hit ctrl-alt-del at which point the Task Manager comes up (but rest of the screen is still black)?

EDIT: confirm that when you do Windows key+P that "Computer only" is displayed (assuming you can run this in current state)

Hi it's hubby's pc so don't know what he did/does , he just pesters me when it doesn t work. It's on atm and I've downloaded this vpl (is it) player and he can watch his films by inserting them into the pc. It seems to be whenever I download an anti virus that things start to go wrong. I was t anticipating having to refesh his pc again today. Don't want to be doing this all the time.

So you HAVEN'T done another refresh AND so you haven't had the same problem today?
Let's check that you have the Windows8 default anti-virus running...
    1. Click the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_818.jpg. In the search box, type Defender, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Defender.
    2. Click Tools, and then click Options.
    3. Click Administrator, Is the Use this program check box ticked or not? If unticked then tick it and then click Save. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
