When I tried this it just switched off and no options came up
Do you mean a power button onscreen because if you do I can t see any and the power button on the PC itself switches it off0 -

Yes there s a place to type in his logon password, there s a shutdown switch,an Internet icon and an ease of access icon which isn t easy at all. Then I read about going and clicking on boot options but where do I find that and also system config can't find that either.0 -

** You want Troubleshoot (as per Bedsit Bob) -> Advanced Options -> and I suggest for starters -> Startup Repair **0 -

Start up repair couldn't repair it0 -
Troubleshoot -> Refresh. **with care** Do not select reset as all your data will go.Select Refresh and sit back and ...I'm having a beer...fingers crossed...
NB. all installed programs will require to be reinstalled later.
And thank bedsitbob for the Restart+Shift trick - where on earth did he find that!?0 -

Doing that now and fingers crossed indeed. All I want to do is get into my nice warm bed0 -
