Today's useless bit of information. I caught part of a radio programme about old fashioned sweets. Anyone remember flying saucers? Apparently their pre-sweet use was to put medicine in to make it easier to eat. And marshmallows were originally made from bits of the mallow plant and also used medicinally, which is why they're always pink and white - the flower and the root. Must get round to finding the rest of the programme - it's the type of trivia that appeals to me.
Oh yes! I love flying saucers! You can still get them!

I have a marshmallow plant, and sometimes the flower does taste of marshmallow! Yes, I do try it!

You used to be able to buy actual liquorice root, which was very fibrous, so you just sucked it. I love liquorice, but can't stand Haribo, or the very soft kind. No-one seems to sell the hard, very chewy liquorice sticks any more. :(

  • MY husband is depressed and anxious again and sometimes this comes out as moroseness and anger....last night he 'consoled' himself by having a political argument on Facebook....hope he hasn't lost all his friends.

He had an operation for Dupuytrens Contracture, and whilst that is healing well, he has developed a lot of pain and swelling in the hand and arm, and the Consultant thinks he has developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which can be cured by a cortisone injection, but may need more surgery :( As this is his guitar-playing, pencil-holding, motorbike-riding hand, then he is getting more and more anxious and thinking he is never going to be able to pursue his hobbies again.

I am having to remain upbeat whilst being sympathetic and am needing more time than usual on my own to recharge.

Glad I have this thread as somewhere I can unwind. Thanks all.

  • Hugs to you, SDW. Hope your husband recovers well.

  • Thanks HS, and I'm glad to report that the pain was a lot less last night after he wore a wrist splint :) Consequently his mood is brighter :)

(((SDW))) and for your husband too! It's horrible being in pain, and so easy to take it out on those around you (not that he should be doing that of course, but I think we've all had those 'bear with a sore head' days). Hope today's a better day for both of you.

When does spring start?? I am freezing! The wind and rain kept me awake half the night, and now I can't feel my feet. This is not spring! Was hoping for a lovely bright Easter with lots of walks but looks like it might be an indoors one.
  • Yep, I want spring - whoever ordered the rain, can you send it back please? :)

    Hello Metalswan!

Weather was terrible here last night, really windy and wet and horrible! I was supposed to be playing badminton today (for the first time in nearly 2 years! :o) but the leisure centre called us to cancel the court as the roof has been partially blown off! At least it saves me the indignity of people seeing me in my slightly too tight gym kit! :p

Hi metalswan. Good to see you.

Sdw - sorry about your husband. Hope he feels a bit better soon.

I am so tired. Wind kept me awake late into the night and a car alarm was going off too - I think a bin blew into it. It also snowed this morning which is rubbish - I'd like warmer weather even if I'm not summer clothes ready.

  • I think I am going to spend Good Friday under a duvet watching my favourite films and sleeping. I'm a bit of a wreck at the moment.

Anyone else got any plans? Feeling nosey :)

I'm never summer clothes ready code! Just looked at the BBC weather forecast and it's saying snow for tonight. How is that right?? I live in the middle of England and it's April tomorrow!

Will be spending Friday and Sunday doing church stuff. A family meal at some point (sun or mon, depends on niece's availability). Am supposed to be going on a walk with meetup group on Sat but think I may be hibernating instead. Same goes for the planned walk around the local alpaca farm on Monday!
