agreed, UNLESS you have gluten intolerance as a component of your problems.

I love porridge but it really hurts me at the moment. (Enormous hiatus hernia, and I don't get on the with the standard meds.) I definitely feel better if I avoid bread, porridge and pasta. The only one of these it's easy to avoid is porridge - cos you sort of go out of your way to eat porridge, whereas the others are inside meals you would be eating anyway :( So I just put up with the discomfort or pain, generally.

Yes, do read the book, because reading about the research results etc. is inspiring, and about the benefits to the heart, pancreas etc., and as protection against stroke, Alzheimer's etc.

I'm back on track after a 6week blip due to Christmas, illness/bedrest and stuffing my face during both, and the weight I put on is going again. Phew!

There's a new book out which I think gives more info about the research, because all the research on it is an ongoing thing.

What JM says is so true, it's only being hungry for a day, twice a week. Psychologically, knowing you can eat what you like the next day is fantastic! And as you get into it, you find you don't binge the next day, in fact you're much more conscious of how physically bad over-eating makes you feel! And yes, you appreciate food, and particularly good food, much more. I eat more vegetables and rice as a result of the 5:2, because that's what I really want!. But if I want two cinnamon whirls on an eating day, that's what I'll have too. (I try not to, because they're one of two things that I'm addicted to, and it's easy to say I won't have two, I'll have three! Oink!oink!)

Right now I'm having a fast day, and the thought if a plate of cooked vegetables is wonderful!

Some fast days are easier than others. Today, I'm not so busy.....have done a Zumba class, but really need to learn lines this afternoon.......so it's a bit harder. Other days, especially when busy, I'm absolutely fine.

Tealover, what's your alcohol intake like? I used to drink a lot of wine, for years, not to alcoholic levels, but a lot, and during that time I had a lot of symptoms of IBS. When I stopped drinking wine, and not much other alcohol, the problem resolved. Eating more vegetables also helped. If I go through a phase of drinking a bit more alcohol, beer usually, it can start to come back, although I don't drink anything like the amount I used to!
Alcohol also upsets the intestinal flora/fauna and tends to decimate the really beneficial ones.

    Worth thinking about, anyway!

    I don't really drink Pyxis. I don't not drink, but I'll maybe have a beer 3 or 4 times a year.

You've made me think about rice now, I love rice! Could just eat a bowl of brown rice and nothing else :D

    Not that then!
Do you eat a lot of sugary things? Too much sugar can upset the flora/fauna too.

Should point out that the 5:2 is not suitable for those with EDs or women who are ttc.

I quite liked it but...I didn't lose any weight last time. Also my method is not to eat til dinner on fast days and I need food for painkiller taking.

Yeah that's probably my downfall if this is diet-related. I do love a biscuit (or 10 :D)

Was doing v well on MFP up to christmas but it's all gone downhill since then lol. Not that the pain or other symptoms were any different, but at least I weighed less!

In some ways I hope it is something to do with food, as then I could potentially do something about it. If it's just due to the adhesions I'm scuppered.

ETA: good points code. I'm not sure my painkillers on an empty stomach would be a good idea. Think I just need to get back to basic food logging on MFP.

tea - I have IBS. Mostly I ignore it, but I do take fibre supplements to help things along and I also take acidophilus probiotics (started doing this after GPs gave me 3 courses of antibiotics for something that was not a sinus infection). I avoid cruciferous vegetables because they just mean a whole world of pain for me.

Have you ever tried a wheat-exclusion test? I know that wheat products do make my insides produce a lot of gas, within minutes of eating them! I don't not eat wheat, but I know what to expect if I do!

Not much advice here Tea, but it can't hurt to make a GP appointment so do so! :)

I'm getting really tempted to try 5:2 but I do get a little woozy if I don't eat enough so a bit worried about that. I might get the book and have a read, if I know that I can eat a sufficient amount of food for under 500 calories that'll take away the fear so I can give it a go!

Hehe, this has reminded me of Sheldon from TBBT thinking he was dying after eating a bowl of sprouts! :rotfl:
