I actually feel quite sorry for the girlfriend (lone voice, I know). Yes, she has lied but unless she is a complete psychopath, there has to be a reason - and it can't be good. Why would anyone want to live a lie (this particular lie anyway) for five years?

I would be just as concerned about your son.. the only reason he knows now is of a because of a mortgage application... Where's he been....The International space station?
Do they have a deposit?... If it's been saved solely from his wage how have they managed to live sustain themselves for all these years...Even with monetary help from family anyone with their noodles in place would notice something..And I'm sure no one good hide the lack of 18k every year for all that time.
Are you sure it's not a ploy on his behalf to get sympathy in the form of help with a mortgage?

Similar to my thoughts in post #27

because they can't be arsed to get a proper job?
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Presumably gf would be looking for a sharia compliant mortgage. I don't know if this introduces more complications.

Because gf could not get a work permit more likely.
    Son presumably had a job.

I'd be asking your son a lot more questions

I honestly don't believe you can live with someone for five years and not know

Why did he tell you and what does he expect you to do ?

Mind you if there is no debt and she has reproduced an appearance of an income of two working people she must be one heck of a manager.

Is your son usually very unobservant abnd completely uninterested in his own household finances ?

  • Looking from outside in here... After 5 years of spending time with a person and I missed something like this... I would be taking a serious look at myself, to know how I have missed something so basic.

I am wondering if its a shop she volunteers in if she may have been paying herself a 'wage'? It would explain the complete absence of income
  • There are an awful lot of replies here to the very brief outline of a story. The first few responses seem to just jump in based on the thread's title with no other information. Don't worry I'm sure the OP will reappear every so often to add more confusion to this story.

You hit the nail on the head there. On the rare occasions when the OP comes back and replies, the 'updates' are about 3 (abbreviated) sentences long and they leave even more confusion.
