Cutting out sugar from my diet. Has anyone else done this (or IQS)?

I have followed the low carb high fat diet successfully. Result - 4 stone lost, blood glucose normal and GP said "I don't know what you're doing but keep on doing it" and cut down my diabetes meds.
I cut out fruit juice completely and sadly cut down on fruit because from the body's point of view sugar is sugar no matter where it comes from.
If anyone is interested in LCHF have a look at The Diet Doctor, a Swedish site but in English. Seems the Swedish Govt are recommending this diet for everyone.0 -
Room for a newbie
Over the last couple of weeks I have realised just how addicted to sugar I have become
I think it started whilst on maternity leave (my son is now four) and I got into the habit of having cake etc every afternoon. I now suffer from a major afternoon slump which I inevitably fix with a sugary snack. I have also got into the habit of having chocolate whilst watching TV on am evening. I really want to break the habit and to be able to enjoy these foods as an occasional treat.
I'm not going to go cold turkey, as I need to use up what I have in the house. I will however gradually reduce it and replace products when they run out with lower sugar alternatives.
First, I would like to tackle my mid afternoon slump. From my reading increasing fats and proteins are the way to stop this. I will be starting by upping protein at breakfast time.GC: Feb (16th Jan - 15th Feb) £46.25 / £50

I find a banana mid afternoon keeps me going til tea time. I limit myself to a small piece of choccy in the evening now rather than a family bar.If you change nothing, nothing will change!!0 -
Morning All
Welcome to the newbies!
Superrhinos- to get over you mid-afternoon slump, how about eating some nuts, or a wholewheat cracker with avocado. Healthy, yummy and should give you a boost. If you don't eat fruit, like me, it is perfect.
Murphy- I have heard a lot about the LCHF diet, lots of people are saying its worked wonders for them. Well done on your achievement!
So its the end of my first full week, and I have lost a total of 4lbs. The intense cravings have now disappeared. In the evenings I no longer crave chocolate as soon as I have finished dinner. I also seem to be waking up earlier, and am more full of energy.
I used to wake up every morning with what felt like a mild hangover, as I used to spend the evenings eating sugary foods. But now I don't, I wake up and am awake enough to get up straight away and it feels lovely!
I currently have a stinking cold though, so feel yukky, LOL.0 -

Well done, that's brilliant - great reasons for giving up; Shame about the cold tho', just watch out for those sugary meds!0 -
Thanks Inazuma
How are you getting along with it?
I only take ibroprofen, I avoid taking meds at all unless I can possibly help it. They are sugar coated pills, but I'd rather not feel ill, and they don't seem to be encouraging any cravings0 -
mel48rose - Thanks for the suggestion. I currently have a banana mid morning if I feel hungry before lunchtime. Afternoon has always been a time for a "treat".
WantToBeSE - That's a great result in such a short space of time. It's stories like this that have given me the incentive to give this a try.
Not been a great first day today as we were celebrating my son's birthday. To be fair though I wasn't expecting it to be and my intention isn't to give up sugar entirely just to enjoy it in moderation. My aim today was to enjoy some of the sweet treats in moderation. So I did have a piece of chocolate fudge cake and a very small piece of birthday cake.
I have avoided sweet things the rest of the day. This may not seem like a big achievement but I am very much an emotional / habitual eater with regards to sugar and I think this is going be hard to change. This morning for example I hit a slump mid morning after having a bad nights sleep. Usually, without really thinking about it I would have had a couple of biscuits with my tea. Instead this morning I tried to distract myself and when I felt I was actually hungry I had a piece of toast.
This evening whilst watching tv I have really craved some more birthday cake as this is a time when I generally will eat chocolate or cake etc so have tried to distract myself on my laptop. I have just made myself a cup of herbal tea as I hope the flavours may help to take my mind of it.GC: Feb (16th Jan - 15th Feb) £46.25 / £50

Same here - it feels too much of a waste to get rid of everything. Used up a japanese stir fry sauce from the freezer yesterday - 25g of sugar in a 2 serving sachet! :eek:My debt free diary | Post Office loan: £2131 1429.38 | Barclaycard: £4429 1988.12 | Paypal Credit £322.71 574.91 | Monzo Flex £169.03 |

I have done this in steps too.
1- Stop eating chocolate, sweets and fruit.
2- Stop eating jam/lemon curd and other sugary condiments. Stop drinking sugar in tea/coffee
3- Stop eating low fat products and switch to full fat.
4- Anything else has to have less than 5g per 100g of sugar in.
That is where I am at the moment.0 -

How have you found it so far? Do you feel better for the changes?
Good day today. I was at home all morning by myself an mmanaged to resist both the buscuits and leftover birthday cake. I did apple crumble this evening but I did have a pot of tea in the pub this evening instead of my usual g&t. I expect tomorrow to be more difficult as I am back to work and it is unusual for there not to be some sort of sweet treats in the office.GC: Feb (16th Jan - 15th Feb) £46.25 / £50
