Cutting out sugar from my diet. Has anyone else done this (or IQS)?

My OH and I went onto a LCHF (Low carb High fat) eating plan last year and haven't looked back. Both of us have lost over a stone and feel so much better for it. I'm now at the sort of weight I passed through in my teens (I'm 50) and have lost about 5 inches off my waist.
If you're knocking out sugar, you perhaps should consider reducing carbs, as carbs get broken down into sugars.
Check out 'Escape the diet trap' by Dr John Briffa, it's really turned our lives around. We eat well and are never hungry, we've just cut out the foods which put the weight on, and increased the fat we eat. Which sounds mad until you read the true science behind it.
Oh, and I eat chocolate most days now, a couple of squares of dark chocolate after dinner.
Hi Slinky, thanks for this. I am low carbing and doing ok but really miss all the rubbish with sugar in, so looking for help here with that.0 -
Morning all, I'm trying to shift about 14lb at the moment and have been trying ww. 3 weeks ago I read the nutritional values on the back of a named brand low fat yoghurt and was amazed at the amount of sugar in it. I have now swapped back to full fat everything just having a little less instead. No Buying Unnecessary Toiletries: July stash 72/0 INS/2 UU/0 TA0

Chrome tablets are supposed to help with sugar cravings. We take them, you can get them from Healthspan.
If I'm craving something sweet, I usually have a few nuts (cashews, almonds or brazils not peanuts) and that usually sorts it.Make £2025 in 2025

Lovely to see more people joining us.
Slinky, I was thinking about low carbing once I have got the rest of the sugar out of my system.
At the moment I am cutting out any junk food, sweets, chocolate, sweet breads such as brioche and croissants, fruit (only to reset my palate), ice cream, crisps, pre made sauces and anything labelled low fat or low sugar.
After a few months I will think about low carbing, but 1 step at a timeReally pleased to hear that it works for you

Breakfast this morning is avocado on bread. Tastes lovely
I am already seeing a difference with bloating. I am always quite bloated around my stomach area, and its gone down a lot. This is really encouraging me to continue. Yesterday was a really hard day, and I cheated slightly by drinking a pepsi max to quell the sugar cravings. It didn't really taste all that nice, but it got me through a tight spot.
I wont be drinking any more of them though, that's not what this is about for me, its not healthy and wont sustain my body and is full of chemicals.
Just while I am going through this withdrawal period though, it was OK that once.
Not sure what lunch will be today. I sustained a bad injury to my hand on Monday, so cant really cook or cut or chop things, which is making things really difficult. But I might be able to make a soup or something.0 -

Avocado on toast sounds lovely, I am doing it the other way round - have cut out carbs and will reintroduce them gradually! Really looking forward to some bread, I miss it more than anything else.
Re diet coke etc - I am propping myself up with it when I feel the notion to open the fridge door and remove some chocolate or biscuits. I also love dried fruit but am not doing that either so I find it's quite a good substitute. I would like to cut it out completely but I also don't drink alcohol so have diet coke when I go out. Everything else behind the bar is - TaRa! - full of sugar. Any suggestions about this aspect of low sugar life would be appreciated. I have fizzy water when we eat out, but blimey, it's sooooo boring!
Hope your hand is ok, sounds nasty.
Thanks for the tip about chrome, Slinky, haven't heard that before. Am doing nuts as occasional snack but trying not to go crazy on them as my low sugar granola is mainly nuts. They don't really hit that sweet space for me, but they are a bit of a diversion. Am doing sugar free jelly, not something I'd normally eat but keeping all options open!0 -
Inazuma- I am not doing any type of fruit, including dried, either.
In regards to alcohol..it depends what you are trying to achieve really. I am aiming to limit my consumption of Fructose as opposed to anything else. When I refer to quitting sugar, its fructose I am talking about. A lot of alcohols have minimal fructose in them because the fructose in the fruit gets turned into alcohol (according to my IQS book); Red wine, beer and spirits. You want to go for dry wines, the dryer the better.
Yes, the hand is a bit better today thanks. Not as bad as I had feared, so cooking isn't too much of an issue, but chopping is a bit difficult.0 -

Well, I got on the scales today and have lost 3lbsReally pleased with that! Especially since I haven't felt at all hungry.
Having granola with yogurt for breakfast this morning, and then going to take the car to the garage and do an online shop with Sainsburys. They are the best of the big 4 (IMO) to do a shop with, since they do a wider selection of wholewheat pasta and beans and other things that I use.0 -
According to Dr John Briffa, red wine is better than white (carbs) and spirits are better than beer IIRC. If I'm out and driving I no longer drink orange juice and lemonade, I've switched to lime and soda water (which I ended up getting free in a pub last week as she couldn't work out how to put it through their electronic till!).Make £2025 in 2025

Thanks but I am a former addict to that poison as well, gave up almost five years ago so still on the diet coke, sadly!0
