make sure your software (windows) firewall is on if you connect it directly to the modem

don't understand what you're doing in control panel, but ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew may get you somewhere

I also do not understand what you were trying to do in control panel and presumably you did not do this yesterday while at your friends house.

You need to follow instructions to the letter, not pick and choose what you do!

It states 'media disconnected' because you instructed it to release the connection.

No I did not do anything in control panel while at friends house, why would I ? I plugged in cable and it worked!

I am not picking and choosing what I do, it said "media disconnect both on ipconfig /release and then on ipconfig /renew !

So why did you today then? You should have told the Virgin script monkey that they were talking bo!!ocks because you knew that your Ethernet card was working perfectly at your friends yesterday.

    Apply some logical thinking please!

You know something, I've made mistakes..... I am not a tech wiz, I forgot to mention abt the cable today t the woman, before today never even heard of an Ethernet card.... I went onto the control panel to see if I could get the Ethernet cable to work, ok I couldn't .............big deal.

Is this issue being put down to a Modem / router problem if so how can it be prevented in the future?
    Thanks

I have just tried another Ethernet cable to see if that would work and it didn't, Virgin are sending me a new combined modem/router.... I hope this works. But she did say she thought there's something on my laptop, spyware or whatever.... I have done so many scans, did avast and malwarebytes today and they were ok.

If all the scans you have done are coming back clean don't worry
Virgin are just reading from a script on their computers and don't have a clue , they only say what their PC tells them to say.

Rang virgin couldn't connect by Ethernet cable, she tried allsorts ran some test in command prompt that came up with "State" saying "listening" ( Netstat) over 25 times which she says is something on laptop and the Ethernet card on laptop may be corrupted, but what she is going to do is upgrade my broadband and send me a new all in one modem/router and take it from there, that will come on satuday.

This is what I did in command prompt, wonder if it was the remains of that super optimizer............

Well this morning the "Greek" seems to have gone, all browsers in google play showing all English... the only one thing is Chrome still showing homepage as google Greece, tried to unistall Chrome but it keeps saying close all chrome windows first and they are closed.
