It's a few years since I last experienced Virgin cable but it used to be necessary to power down the modem if you connected a different device to it e.g. disconnected a router and connected a PC directly to the modem. There is no good reason that you can't connect a single device directly to the Virgin modem.

Stop wondering, read the thread before posting your thoughts from another planet!

Tried again to connect via cable/modem need isp number and password.. need to ring virgin again, will have to do it later have to go out soon. Going to ring now.

Yesterday you told us that you had powered down the modem, so you must have had "isp number and password" then!

Fault finding has to be a logical step by step process - the poke and hope approach does not work and simply wastes everybody's time.

Rang virgin couldn't connect by Ethernet cable, she tried allsorts ran some test in command prompt that came up with "State" saying "listening" ( Netstat) over 25 times which she says is something on laptop and the Ethernet card on laptop may be corrupted, but what she is going to do is upgrade my broadband and send me a new all in one modem/router and take it from there, that will come on satuday.

I powered down the modem yesterday, there was nothing asking me for isp number, this was asked for today when I went into control panel to try connect via the cable, and as I now know from ringing virgin I didn't need that anyhow. I was trying to fix the problem not waste anyones time, I am extremely grateful for everyone's help.

did they ask you to do any ipconfig /release or ipconfig /renew from the cmd prompt.

where are you entering passwords in control panel

the new modem could complicate things further, hopefully not
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand

make sure your software (windows) firewall is on if you connect it directly to the modem

don't understand what you're doing in control panel, but ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew may get you somewhere

I have a vague recollection of seeing something like this before, unfortunately it's still too vague at the moment.
