OP, if you are going to start quibbling about £7 to fit something to your car that took 2 minutes, I dread to think how you're going to feel when a garage charges you full hour labour charges, even for a partial hour :o

Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.

What?! People are actually queueing up for this outrageous scam?

7 quid for a 5 minute bulb change would indicate the Halfords assistant is on £84 an hour! More like NMW!

    What a hoot!:rotfl:

What if the bulb change takes 30 minutes or longer is it still a scam
  • Complete rubbish, show me a link now to somewhere that does it cheaper. (you can't as it is the cheapest)

Try doing it on an old Ford Fiesta & I can guarantee you'll pay £6.99!

My front side lamp has gone on my Ford Fiesta MK6 (08 reg) and as I work during the week find it hard to get to the mechanics.

I've looked into how to replace the bulb myself as I am quite capable at DIY, etc. But as a novice to cars I am quite cautious at doing it myself. You have to remove the front grill and then remove the headlight unit to get into the bulbs. One of the screw fixings is right behind the bumper, so you need a ratchet wrench and specific T30 drill bit which I don't have and would have to buy if I was going to do it myself.

So I'll be visiting Halfords tomorrow and will gladly pay for the service. I'll probably watch them and then decide if it's worth getting the wrench and drill bits for later.

I watched him change the bulb and I know I can do it next time as it's fairly simple on my car.

I didn't want to change it for the first time and get it wrong. It was about 7:30pm, I needed it for the next day's commute, and the other car parts shop was closed.

I'm not complaining about Halfords charging for a fitting at all. I'm complaining about how the bulb cost £10 and the fitting was 70% of the price on top. I have no problem with paying people for their time, however when a job costs me £7 and takes all of 5 minutes it seems a bit wrong.

would you have felt differently if they had broken down the cost for you? I admit I have used Halfords fitting service a couple of times, once for a headlight which, like yours, blew at 6pm, I would have been driving the following morning before it got light, and I have a Halfords nearby, so I used them that evening. I paid over the odds for both the bulb and the fitting to be honest, but at least the Hlafords staff did break down the cost to me before I paid up.

Having entertained the street with a 2 hr performance in changing windscreen wipers what ever Halfords want to charge I'd gladly pay!

Last time I put new wipers on I did it myself in 2 minutes. As I said with an old Ford Fiesta I once had (97 R reg) It took my near or maybe even more than 45 minutes to change one headlamp bulb. I don't have that car any more but if I did have it it would have gone to Halfords to change the bulb after trying to do it myself.

Well if i didn't have a tame mechanic to do this sort of job, then I would be very willing to pay the price the first time to see how to do it. I would then decide if I was prepared to do it myself or not. Bulbs always go at the most inconvenient time & Halfords are convenient. I wouldn't see that price as a rip off. Just a fair price for a lesson!

Halfords have just spotted a gap in the market where they know a certain % of their customers are saps.

No garage has ever charged me for either a bulb or fixing it if I'm having work done on my motor and I hadn't noticed a bulb had blown.

It's like being charged in a cafe for a plastic teaspoon to stir my tea.

    Pathetic.
