They're a business with overheads, rent, wages etc. You stayed dry while the guy changed it. Also you learned how to do it next time. Job done.

Halfords are not cheap, But they were open and could do it there and then. You paid a premium for that.

Now you know have you ordered yourself a spare set of bulbs?

Luky you done have HID lights. The bulbs for those could have added £100 to the cost.

  • I think £6.99 is a bargain!

If you had taken it to citroen, it would have been Min £20 to fit itm and probably £20 for the bulb.

As others have said, you paid a premium to have someone fit a bulb, at 7:30pm, in a cold dark car park, bargain!
  • I had Halfords fit them to my Corsa...once. Learned how to do it for next time.

Will do the same with the Getz when it's needed - I learn better by watching someone than from a Haynes.

It's a bit pricey but meh, what can you do? :)

  • as above people have said.
theyre a business, they have costs they need to cover such as wages etc. you wanted a service. you got given a price and you accepted it. £7 to have somebody fit a bulb in the cold and the rain in a car park is cheap.
when I worked in a garage we would charge £20 labour for a 5 minute job like that. businesses are just that, they aren't charitys, they have to make money somehow and you accepted a service knowing the price. simple as.

This is exactly how I feel, what can I do? Not a lot. Still allowed to be annoyed by it :)

I always get Halfords to replace my headlight bulbs and consider the £6.99 fitting charge a bargain. But on my car, changing headlight bulbs is a pig with dipped beam accessed through a small hatch in the wheel arch lining and main beam through a small cut out above the headlight that I cannot even get my hand into let alone work in.

It wasn't until I got my receipt and the guy was getting to my car that I saw that the fitting charge was £6.99 and the bulb was £10. Am I the only one who thinks that is excessive?

What would you have considered to be a non-excessive price?
  • I take it you don't have one of those cars that require hands the size of a new born baby, but with the strength of a gorilla and the flexibility of a contortionist to fit then?

The price set by Halfords is a 'one price fits all' service, so for every car where the bulb pops in easily in a minute, there are plenty of others that are extremely difficult, fiddly and impossible to do while retaining all the skin on your hands.

People with cars like those would probably pay £69.99 for bulb fitting, let alone £6.99.

I don't like Halfords for lots of reasons, but if I need a headlight bulb on my car, I would happily pay Halfords £6.99 to fit it.

My idea of a non-excessive price is not 70% of the price of the item I'm having fitted. I probably would have been satisfied at a fiver, then it was 50%. I know it's only a couple of quid but it was the principle. I did think the bulb was excessive, but I suppose I should have expected both prices.

My car is a Citroen C1 - I watched the guy do it in five minutes and I probably could have done it myself. I don't know if you've seen under the bonnet of a C1 but there is plenty of space to change the bulb as the engine is tiny (I call it my hairdryer on wheels)

I've said on another thread that I suffer with anxiety when it comes to driving and my car, so I needed it sorting asap for my own peace of mind. They did that for me, no bother, and I will now be doing them myself.

I am allowed to be annoyed about it.
