Did they ask you for your middle name (if you have any?)

My ID failed with other bank because they forgot to ask for my middle name. Tried again, and passed.
You will only fail to learn if you do not learn from failing.

I tried once and failed; not tempted to try again.

A lot of us in the household and close relatives have been benefiting from switch incentives lately. No-one's really come across any major hurdles yet (Yorkshire Bank?! :o).

Prior to the First Trust Bank offer, we'd all managed to open accounts without any problems. Now it seems that only a minority of us can open an account with them. There have not been any changes to our financial circumstances etc.

So we're all a bit  with this one.

  • I live in Belfast and tried to open the account on the telephone but was told that I hadn't cleared security and asked to bring ID into the branch. I went into the branch this morning and took the following with me - passport, driving licence, vehicle licensing book, house insurance certificate and credit card bill thinking that I had enough with me.

She asked my salary and it was ok, then was asked if I transfering the account my salary was paid into and I said no. I was then informed by the branch that I needed 3 months statement from the account I was transfering in.

I asked could she record my ID and I would open the account by telephone and she no and that all accounts had to be opened in the branch.

Crikey, she seems to be stuck in some sort of a 1950s timewarp.
  • Not sure if there is a legal issue. Northern Irish banks seam reluctant to offer accounts to people who do not live in NI.

Danske Bank - When you apply online the second question is are you a permanent resident of Northern Ireland, If you tick no then a message shows saying unfortunately they cannot continue with the application.

Ulster Bank - Will open an account for a non NI resident. However they want the application form signed in the presence of a solicitor.

Bank of Ireland (Northern Ireland) - Not sure.

In the old days there were Ulster Bank, Bank Of Ireland, Northern Bank (now Danske bank) & First Trust. That was it. Now Barclays, HSBC and I guess others offer banking in NI so I am not sure why the others are not happy to accept customers from all over the UK.

I opened an Ulster account entirely online back in early 2013. I held accounts with RBS and Natwest at the time, which might have eased the application.

    Lucky you!

Last year I applied online but before they would complete the application they wanted a solicitors signature on the application form. I think this was to confirm that they had witnessed me signing the form and that they had seen my passport.

I also bank with Natwest in England, so maybe they just didn't like me!
