What does the law say about plates for trailers and caravans? Presumably they must comply with font and spacing, but do they need the BS and postcode details? It can't be checked at MoT time because trailers don't get an MoT (normal domestic types I mean).

What if you want a number plate for your house name? I enquired about this at Halfords.

Me: I want a white number plate to read "THE XXXXX".
Halfords: We need to see your driving licence and V5.
    Me: V5 for what?
    H: For your car.
    M: What car?
    H: Your car.
M: But this is nothing to do with my car.
    H: Sorry, company rules.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.

same rules applies to trailer and caravan as your bearing the same Registration of the vehicle which is towing it supply your ID and V5C of the car to which the plates are to be placed on the trailer and caravan. so yes if you are looking to buy a plate for a caravan or trailer, you still have to conform to the rules as if you were buying them for a vehicle.
  • One example of interpretation does not legislation make - can you please cite the relevant statute and pertinent section and clauses?

    This is from the DVLA:

While it is already an offence across the UK for motorists to display non-compliant number plates on their vehicles, as of 1st November 2008 it will become an offence to supply number plates that do not comply with the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. Some number plate suppliers already advise their customers that non-compliant number plates cannot be used on the road and are for display purposes only, however, it will now be an offence to supply non-compliant number plates irrespective of any advice given

The relevant offence comes from The Vehicles Crime (Registration of Registration Plate Suppliers) Regulations 2008 which was in force 1st August 2008 and enforcement (by trading standards) began 3 months later on 1st November 2008.
  • Surely debating the finer points of where one should buy number plates is getting into the realms of the morality of doing 75 on an empty motorway with excellent visibility.

If it looks like it complies with the rules, why are you ever going to run into trouble unless you put yourself in a position where the police want to find something with which to get you?

I've been though 5-6 ebay number plates over the last year or two, always to the cheapest price, never with any checks what so ever, and always delighted with the product.

If you really don't want to risk supporting martians disguised as illegal immigrant benefit theifs in the slightest than the only option is to buy the gear to make your own and register with the appropriate bodies etc. Otherwise relax a little and compromise.

The rules re: checking are overkill IMO, it should be either have the car present showing the current registration plate or provide a V5.

They should be allowed to make a replacement number plate if you have the car showing that registration plate with you

Or just go to a registered manufacturer and pay the few quid extra?

Only if you accept that having a car with you proves you own it. I'm guessing most places won't go for that.

the person supplying the number plates has to keep a record of the purchasing persons home address, what id was provided and how payment was made so the plates off of e-bay are supplied illegally but they will more than likely get away with it because this is not checked on a regular basis unless you have an accident and the police want to trace you

Why do you need to own a car to get replacement plates, it could belong to a spouse, child, parent friend etc, but you are driving it and sorting it

The legislation is meant to stop people ringing cars, but you aren't likely to ring your own car, and if the garage actually fit the number plate for you and keep the plates you replaced, there are no additional number plates in circulation to ring a car!

Would you be so wise the next time you purchase from the lowest price on fleabay when the police turn up arrest you for bilking thousands worth of fuel from many different stores because they used your cloned number plate that you supplied to them to make a replacement for you?

It is not likened to doing 75MPH on a motorway, you get fined for that and the money goes back into the system legally, the money you supply these people either go on drugs, mortgage payments, or into funding higher vehicle crime such as steal to order.

How would they steal to order?

you supply number plate number and a free search on askmid would tell you make and model! you have then given them your home address for postage! UH OH....

either way your funding someone doing something illegal.
