I think that you are being a bit harsh - almost insinuating that the ebay seller I gave a link to is involved in various illegal activities.

I have no connection with them at all other than as a satisfied customer.

Did you notice he has 100% positive feedback of nearly 20,000 transactions? that just means he has satisfied customers. doesn't make what he is doing legal in any way shape or form.

Did you notice he is a business seller with full address given in a business park / industrial estate? how many criminals and scammers do you know that will advertise their credentials and be registered at a business but not actually occupy this business premises?

He also quotes his VAT number. again how many crims do you know to slip under the radar and look legit have a shadow or dorment business and VAT number.

I'm sure that ebay has a load of 'dodgy' sellers - but this example is unlikely to be one of them.
If he is selling his number plates as a legit business or motorfactors ONLINE then these can ONLY be off road plates, it is illegal to supply legal plates without first having seen ID and V5C to ensure the plate he is making is not for a ringed car (this is what the law was designed for), he's working around this by entering non existent or his own v5c ref number or simply not at all hence he is actively making and supplying legal plates illegally as a business owner or he is simply putting phony credentials on his advert and the money he is making is not going into the economy it going to criminals.

Its simple in my eyes, if you want off road use ones, then by all means go on the auction sites to find the best deal. if you want one to be legal on the road and want to ensure its legal, and that your not supplying some "dodgy" shed plate maker who is using the money to get his fixes or pay off his mortgage or fund more serious crimes later on, or is not gathering vehicle info for steal to order, then go into an authorized plate maker like alfuds, or a motorfactors, take your photo license OR 2 utility bills with the address's matching that of the V5C and be sure to know that money is not funding dodgy people.

he's not "dodgy" he's only making legal number plates illegally but he's not dodgy though is he.

trading standards make site visits to make sure that all places that make plates conform to the legislative standards that governs the business user of such facilities keep to those laws, if not you can have the machine seized and be prosecuted and or receive a fine for making these plates without having all the relevant documentation at hand.
  • So you don't use eBay or Amazon?

For number plates no. I use my BIL motor factors with my Driving license and V5C they cost me £7.99 and 20 min drive and I get them same day funny enough.

I understand that if incorrect spaced number plates are use then technically you have modified the vehicle [ does not comply with The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations ] and your insurance company should have been notified.

If you don’t declare any modifications that you make, then your insurance policy may be invalidated and it could end up costing, you as the owner and or driver, a packet, and worse temporally loosing the vehicle if PC Plod is involved, not to mention having trouble getting insurance in the future.

    Happy days

I used to modify my vehicle every year when I put a tax disc on it. It like any number plate wasn't there when it left the factory. Should I have informed my insurance?

I fail to see how a plate without a BS mark would invalidate insurance.

Ask your insurance company to find out

You do realise that number plates are excise offences?

If your vehicle does not comply with The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations then your insurance company should be informed as per your agreement with them

Go on ask them to confirm and get it in writing

see here You could be fined up to £1,000 and your car will fail its MOT test if you drive with incorrectly displayed number plates.

That's not construction and use regs.

I bet you call them every time you split a wiper rubber or run out of screen wash.

Halfords/Kwikfit? Or have it done online and ask my mechanic (who is doing a new car service on it next week) to "install" it?

    Kam :T

To be honest, Halfords - for all the bad press they get on here - are quick and easy for number plates. Go along with your V5 and your license ( ID proof ), they'll make one up for you in 10 minutes. OK, you may find cheaper elsewhere, but you're not talking a lot of money, and it's convenient - and the plates are fully legal with all necessary ID checks done.

Fitting them is a doddle if they're screwed on - take the old plate off, lay it over the new plate, use that as a guide to drill new holes, screw new plate on.

I had a set of number plates made by an online company, think they were Jersey based, and the quality was awful and most of these companies do not offer a refund. I went to my local motor factors instead and the quality and price was brilliant.
