  • Been a very good (or very stupid) DFOD today.

With our little camping break looming, I noticed we could still cancel today for a full refund minus £6. Quick chat with DH and we decided to cancel, so £320 on the way back to CC2. BUT... we have promised the kids lots of days out so some of this will get spent, however cattery fees will be saved and when we asked them to do a wishlist of what they wanted to do, nearly 99% of it was free stuff like crabbing, tea at the beach, rock pooling, flying kites. There is a few national trust places we both want to do, but that will be free just the fuel.

Rather proud of my kids that they didn't ask for lots of stuff that costs, the only thing they did was soft play and I'm happy to spend a £10 on that.

All of us are really looking forward to not having to go away and spend more and actually get to have loads of family time together doing fun stuff.

Hoping to have at least £160 (50%) of the refund left at the end of August to knock off the debt.

So crazy or sensible, it's done.

Sounds sensible to me. Otherwise you'd have been away cursing yourselves for spending etc...

  • Awake at silly o clock! Thinking about money, Had a chat with DH yesterday showing him some figures re the mortgage and what we officially have left and what we have to find for him to retire at 65 allowing us at least a year of saving prior to that. Think some of it hit home, whilst he is on board with all that I do, on a daily basis he gets frustrated at not being able to have something right away,

    Productive conversation anyway!

Got freaking out by all the negative publicity about booster seats yesterday, one car has the high backed version, the other has simple booster cushions - the crash test video put paid to that, it's just whether we spend the money getting another two high back boosters or try and manage with one set.. only issue being if DH has to pick the kids the unexpectedly one day and I know it's only four miles through country lanes, but it's hard to put a price restriction on our children's safety - I'm probably answering my own question here!

Day at the beach ahead for the morning, then off for a coastal walk/pasties and a small Nat trust place locally we haven't yet done!

    Happy day all!

  • Hotel cost from the weekend has come through on CC2 so I've made a payment to the CC to clear that and whilst doing so, paid extra pennies floating about of £7.93 bringing the balance to sub £1400 at £1397.69 :j

Totally do-able to get this into three figures now with August payday and actually I'm going to stretch myself a bit and said I want to be sub £800 at the end of September.

CC1, I've put the actual current figure on this in my signature, it's creeping up, but I'm fine with this as we are using it for bits and bobs whilst we tackle CC2. I know it may seem counter productive but it works for me this way and it's costing us nothing in interest. I'm am flinging a few pounds here and there when I can to CC1, but not much and as soon as I eliminate CC2, full attention will turn to CC1.

Good plans are a foot. I must confess Mrs SJ isnt fully on board but shes happy for me to have full control of finances. i just drop in conversations about 'been an expensive month' 'need to reign in a bit' ' kids don't need anymore clothes till next size' etc... i think she's ok with this as well. Then every 6 months i show her the spreadsheet for progress.

I think when your in charge and focussed like us MFW's are it can become quite consuming, and at times Mrs SJ is a reality check that reminds me to live a bit more!

  • I agree SJ, but in reverse, I think us [STRIKE]MFW's [/STRIKE]obsessive freaks also provide a reality check the other way as you say to reign in spending and think about what is purchased.

Quick chat with DH this morning and we are going to trial having one set of car seats and swop them over several times a week!

Enjoying your diary and willing you on to CC freedom :D. It's hard work balancing paying more off mortgage and the CCs - you are doing really well. I was in that place last year.

Will continue to follow your journey if I may, similar amount of mortgage to get rid of and am trying to increase the mortgage free years to increase retirement savings. :)

Going to nose at SJ's bricks too...I've got an excel sheet made into a very square house that I colour (or fill), something prettier would be nice :D
    Back on the DFW Wagon:

    CC - £3,300 on 0% til 04/2020
    CC - £4,500 on 0% til 02/2019
    Loan - £12,063.84 as at 4/1/18
