  • I went to Scotland this weekend. Cycled ran and kayaked all the way across it in fact. Some observations:

    - wild camping is legal. We slept on the beach one night, police were around looking for a missing girl but courteously didn't disturb us... not even to check if we had kidnapped her. (We hadn't)

    - a fortune has been spent on the roads - predominantly empty roads. Reminds me of parts of China. I really liked the signs telling slow drivers to pull over.

    - the weather changes alot

    - the highlands are beautiful

    - the highlands are hilly

    - it is a long way from one side of Scotland to the other

    - there are midges in Scotland

    - there are lots of American and japanese tourists in Scotland

    - Scotland is quite far away

    - there aren't many people in Scotland

    - I will probably go back

    - all the people I met were friendly. Most of them were English

    - I saw a few snp posters etc

    - It's like Wales

  • Hi M

Good to see you made it home.

I posted a reply to you at no 5541. No doubt you were one of the 'fine' cyclists!

I can confirm that there are a number of Scottish people in Scotland. ..! :)

Same old SNP stuff as well.

I've no doubt that Corbyn or his successor will have something improbable to say and enough to entice your Sheeple (SNP word, not mine) away from the SNP's improbabilities .

In the meantime I await the weasel words about the Neverendum (The same old to end all same olds )

The first time I saw the phrase 'sheeple' was on the Housepricecrash forum. Round about the same time Hamish posted there ( so a while ago ). I've no idea who 'coined' the phrase.

We'll have to wait and see what Corbyn has to offer. But if it's nothing more than vote for me in 4 years time... because I 'might'. Am not sure. I think there are a lot hoping for a bit more in the way of something 'radical'. Like the rest of his policies. Would be a shame if it was only concerning Scotland where he wasn't offering something 'radical'. He'll come across sounding like Alistair Darling during BetterTogether otherwise. ( Lead balloon these days ).

There will be a possible referendum in the SNP manifesto for the next election. If people don't want the possibility, then they are free to vote for another party. But it's pretty obvious that by planting the seeds now, by the time the manifesto comes out it won't be a surprise to anyone.

Why did you sign off saying 'Cheers Hub' lol. I like it. :D
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?
  • The Scottish people will decide when the next referendum will be...but only if
the SNP decide they will get a YES vote...?? !!!!!!?

    Apparent derrivation:

    About
Sheeple, a portmanteau of “sheep” and “people,” is a pejorative used toward people who exhibit herd-like and conformist behaviors instead of putting critical thinking into practice. Online, the term is commonly employed by conspiracy theorists to criticize those who question the validity of their beliefs, as encapsulated in the ironic phrase “Wake up, sheeple!"
    Origin
The earliest known use of term “sheeple” can be found in a volume of the Emory University Quarterly published in 1950.[11] The term was popularized in the 1980s by radio host and conspiracy theorist Milton William Cooper.[2][3] On September 26th, 1991, “sheeple” was used in reference to white Americans in a thread on the soc.culture.african.american group on Usenet.[10]
    Spread
In 1999, libertarian political blog Stentorian[6] published an article titled “Defining a New Political Spectrum,” which contained a paragraph on “sheeple” who are described as those who “advocate state power over individuals.” On March 8th, 2002, the conspiracy theory blog The Forbidden Knowledge[5] published an open letter addressed to “the sheeple,” which discussed the existence of the secret “New World Order” Illuminati organization. In 2003, several definitions for “sheeple” were submitted to Urban Dictionary.[4] On October 30th, 2004, a Wikipedia[3] page titled “Sheeple” was launched. On July 15th, 2009, xkcd[8] posted a webcomic titled “Sheeple,” in which a group of train riders all think they are “the only conscious human in a world of sheep” (shown below).

It's a hateful word, the implication being that the user is the only person who can see the world as it truly is and the rest just blindly followed what they are told. Dismissive and arrogant.
  • Latest polling data from YouGov....

48% would vote Yes if an indyref poll was held tomorrow, against 52% who would vote No.

64% of Scots said an independence referendum should be a "once in a generation" event, and 59% believe it should not be in the next SNP manifesto.

53% of Scots support the retention of nuclear weapons, with only 37% saying the UK should give them up.

No wonder Nicola is being cautious....

A majority of Scots support staying in the UK, support the retention of nukes, and by a large margin do not believe the SNP should call for another indyref inside a generation.
“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

    -- President John F. Kennedy”
  • Trouble is the snp bundle their incoherent policies with blind nationalism, fools voting for the latter are seen to support the former where they probably don't even know what the former is or means.

It's like the anti eu mob wanting to keep the British pound for emotive reasons rather than an in depth understanding of the pros and cons of currency union

  • Oh and thanks wr

I of course consider myself a considerate cyclist, and driver.

Some of those hills are steep and long.... stopping to let cars past is difficult as you might not get going again - especially if your feet are clipped in.

Also when overtaking bikes you should only pass if you have room to overtake a car, so 2/3 abreast shouldn't be a major issue - just use the opposite lane. I got blown off my bike at one stage, straight across the road and onto the floor in front of oncoming traffic...... very lucky to be ok.

The amount of times I had cars overtake me, then pull so far over to the left that they were then blocking me - stopping and starting after 48 miles is not so easy!

On CheersHub - Shakey - I originally put Cheers, intending to soften the mood from the normal. My wife's iPad added the "Hub" without me noticing; it was a consequence of Swype, predictive text or just plain iPad cussedness. I'm glad it raised a smile though.

On the matter of "Sheeple". The very first time I heard the word (or even knew it existed) is described
    in this post
Unfortunately the original video is not there any more but in that post I explained well enough I think.

The thing is, if you are waiting for a suitable passing place at the speed of a slow car, then you are probably talking a couple of minutes to reach one.

If you are a waiting for a suitable passing place at the speed of three slow bikes abreast, then you could be talking quarter of an hour of crawling. Not just for you, but the thirty cars stacked up in the line behind you. If you are number 30 in the line, you are probably need a couple of passing points to get past.

If you slow down other road users unnecessarily in a driving test, you get failed.

(for the record, I have no problems with single cyclists assuming the primary position in the road when they need to, though I wish we had more segregated roads for everyone to enjoy)
