Hi rose, good to see this thread bumped again but sorry it is because you have a worry.

I haven't had a drink for two years and eight months, so around the same time as your ex. From my perspective I would only say that as he has found the willpower to stay dry for so long, I'd think he is probably past the point where being with drinkers could sway him. I certainly don't even envy them now, and find it mildly amusing when they are getting steadily plastered.

If he does have a problem with it, maybe he should go back to AA, if that is where he received support in the past. Has he actually said he struggles when he is with his parents, or is it just resentment that they are not appearing to respect his situation?

It's very good of you to be so concerned, given that he is your ex, but as the father of your children I appreciate that you want to encourage him to lead a sober life. It sounds like he is doing very well, and hopefully he will find the strength of character to simply ignore the drinking that goes on around him. It's an attitude of mind, and I'm sure if he works on it he will get over this hurdle.

Thanks for your reply. I think it is just he feels they dont respect his situation but my mil has always been the most tactless person I have ever met. Every time something happens that is upsetting she just laughs about it. I.E. When my husband was sexually assaulted as a child, when she nearly let our two children drown in a reservoir, when he slit his wrists etc. He is doing really well and if he has a bad day he just goes for a long walk or goes off climbing. For instance on Boxing Day 2008 when he had been sober for 8 months he climbed Ben Nevis on his own and told me when he got to the top he got down on his knees and thanked God for his sobriety. ( He does not believe in God so that was something.) I will suggest he speaks to his brother about it or go to a meeting. Glad you are doing well also.

Good grief I'm surprised he wants anything to do with his mother after that upbringing!

Maybe when he goes to visit he should take himself a bottle of non-alcoholic wine or beer (although I've heard that this doesn't work for everyone as the taste makes them crave the real thing). Alternatively one of his favourite soft drinks, e.g. a carton of good quality fruit juice. That way he can feel he's having his own treat, and taking care of his health at the same time.

Good luck to him, and to you. It must be half the battle that he still has you for support.

Hello Loulou, how are you today? I have only just seen your post so that is the reason for the delay in replying. I'll keep an eye on this now and look forward to your return

Giving this thread a bump because..... 1000 days today! :T

Unfortunately my dear OH has just read me an article out of yesterday's Daily Mail about the benefits of alcohol in moderation, i.e. reduced risk of dementia, cardio vascular disease, and all sorts of other nasties that generally come with older age.

Ironic that although I'm never even tempted from an "enjoyment" point of view these days, I'm now wondering whether I should take the occasional glass of red wine (which I dislike so wouldn't enjoy) just for medicinal purposes  .

I wonder if there is anything non-alcoholic that has similar health properties.

    Congrats Bogof well done
Good luck to you if you can do it. Personally I think that nuts have many therapeutic and medicinal properties but not to someone with a severe nut allergy. I look upon booze like that. Best of luck to anyone who can but I cannot no matter how long I am off it and no matter what good it may do the rest of creation.
