Finally got some sense out of TalkTalk!
If you ring 0808 108 0655 (the recommended number for assistance) you'll get through to Virgin Media's crap Indian call centre, and they can't tell you anything. Insist they transfer you to TalkTalk - don't accept the chargeable no. they'll try to foist on you!
Information from TalkTalk:
If you currently have free evening and weekend calls, this will continue.
TT don't automatically take over your line rental if you're with BT. However, if you do decide to go with TT for line rental it's slightly cheaper per month than BT and you'll get free broadband for 12 months. However, you will be tied into an 18 month contract.
The straight move from VM to TT does not tie you in to any lengthy contract.
Now all I've got to deal with is the email problem!0 -

.....still lots of inconsistencies out there ...my sister in law has been told that they WOULD take over her phone line unless she objected (wonder when they are going to tell VM National customers about the bulk slamming !??) and that the TT rental package does not include any calls !
Left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing comes to mind0 -
TBH I've been meaning to leave virgin for a long time so I'm not too bothered about the move, also I stopped using any virgin email accounts years ago - back when I first considered moving away lol - so we shall have to see what happens, will we get a talk talk email? I just hope there is no service disruption. Won't miss the crappy customer service. To all intents and purposes we are already with talk talk anyway.0

Don't know about the email. I expect there will be a TT facility available, but I'm thinking now's the time to purchase a domain name and thereby obtain my own email capability.0 -
Re email address
This is what I think will happen to the Virgin email accounts after switchover to TalkTalk.
The login ports via Virgin will remain in service for one year after switchover. This means that email clients, outlook, Thunderbird, can be used for one year.
After that time need to use Virgin webmail to manage email accounts, ie. go to http://www.virginmedia.com/ , click on the email link and login.
I have not found any information about this, just hoping that this will happen to preserve the email addresses.0 -
I received my welcome email from TalkTalk today.
The email included this;
If you do not have a recurring payment method set up on your account, like Direct Debit or recurring card, a surcharge of £4.50 will be applied to your account each month from 15th March 2015
If you pay your TalkTalk bills by automatic monthly credit/debit card payments, a surcharge of £1.99 will be applied to your account each month from 15th March 2015.
As I pay by credit card it looks as though I will be paying an extra £1.99 a month, unless I can find a way of changing this.
Worth while checking your payment method.0 -
Updates;
Re email address
Had a bit more time to look into this.
There is Virgin FAQ page on emails; http://store.virginmedia.com/discover/broadband/national/email.html
This appears to be saying that even the webmail account will be deleted in one year. This does go against my past experience.
Re payment method
So far unable to change this as the relevant Virgin page is down.0 -
Haggle time- guys.
Got my letter today.
Phoned Talk Talk.
Their proposed monthly bill would be £3 more than Virgin's.
They offered £3 discount to stay.
I pointed out this was, in real terms, no discount at all.
Guy went on hold and came back with a further £5 per month discount.0 -

That's some useful info. I was specifically wondering about the tie-in to any contract. They are about to lay fibre in our neighbourhood and I don't want to be stuck on a lengthy contract for regular ADSL and be unable to upgrade/switch provider when the time comes. Can anyone else confirm?0 -
Latest email - methinks this could run and run...
'We recently sent you an email about your move from Virgin Media to TalkTalk. We’re sorry that we were unable to move you to your new package as planned.
This means that for now you’re still a Virgin Media customer, on the same package and terms and conditions as before, and your payment details remain with Virgin Media for now.
What happens next?
We’re looking forward to welcoming you to TalkTalk. You don’t need to do anything – your account will now be moved to the TalkTalk Plus Phone & Broadband package on 26th March 2015
If you have any further questions please give us a call on 0808 108 0655.
Yours sincerely'0
