"We remained in this freezing, unsafe house for a year after our 6 month AST ended as we didn't want another family to suffer like we have done".

Not a verbatim quote from the tenant, but an approximation. Classic!

It never ceases to amaze me, the endless carnival of idiots they get on this and Judge Judy... I'm still a closet addict though... shhh! :shhh: ;)

Interesting that he would only carry claim through until first s21.

I know this is basically arbitration, so no precedent. But seems very unfair on the LL

Thanks Pastures for the concise post of the events, currently in work and watching with headphones in.

I am suprised at the award, also I got the impression that the LL didnt protect the deposit as holding the deposit in cash.

I think if this went to CC it would have been a totally different outcome

Do admit though thought her reasons for staying were strange also

What is actually the legal basis for this show? It's just a form of arbitration right? With the award paid out of the show's appearance fees?

Yes just arbitration, although i have seen some of them that I dont agree with his rulings. Didnt think that their appearance fee would be used to pay it out but I believe they are dealing with cases up to the value of 5K but cannot see their appearance fees being more than £500 if anything at all

Not far off. In Judge Judy the parties agree to present their respective arguments to Judge Judith Scheindlin (who is a qualified and experienced judge on the New York Family Circuit) and abide by her ruling. They cannot then go on to pursue the same case through civil courts, unless Judge Scheindlin dismisses the case 'Without Prejudice' so that it can be pursued to a fuller degree in court, which she occasionally does in more serious matters.

In return, both parties have their costs and any award made upon adjudication settled by the show's producers. I'd imagine that the same applies to Judge Rinder and any other similar "court tv" formats...
