We have 2 kitchens (2 adjoining homes) so quite a lot of worktop!
Kitchen 1 - kettle, blender, kitchen roll, marble slab with scales on & a mug tree on one side, utensil pot and a s/s trivet each side of hob on the other worktop. Windowsill has dish of dried chillies, salt pig & torch for going out to shed!
Kitchen 2 - Kenwood stand mixer, kettle, 2 utensil pots & an old treacle tin with small cake tools in. Other side has DH's pasta machine. Windowsill has 5 orchids in ceramic pots, pot with wul, pot with marigolds, scourer & wash-up brush.2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇

I have only just come across this thread, and read about her, plus a little of the thread, so apologies for an instant reaction here.....however, I just wanted to say this as it is something that has been a part of my life at times over a number of years.
So...... someone has the OCD opposite of hoarding, this becomes a problem (well not really, more an observation of herself) , re-evaluate and correct, write a book, kick in a bit of feng shui chat, teach the world.
I'm not meaning a criticism here of those finding it useful. As a hoarder who has fought and changed (kind of) that, I am talking from an observation that I think she is talking bull personally.
If it is working for folk though, that's good. Everyone has different methods.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -

I see your point as I actually have diagnosed OCD and I do think it can be a bit like that as getting rid of stuff can be the opposite of hoarding.
But, I don't see many negative points to getting rid of unnecessary stuff from your house though, unless you are taking it to real extremes and not keeping medication you need or enough food or something. I honestly feel more positive with less clutter around. I feel like I can think clearer and have more energy as I don't have to waste time cleaning and organising.PollyWollyDoodle wrote: »Morning, all. Pavlovsdog, one of the little things that's made a big difference to me is moving stuff off the worktop and into cupboards. Tea, coffee and sugar now fit into the mug cupboard; the compost caddy is under the sink, and as soon as I've used up some cleaning products, the washing-up liquid and antibacterial spray are joining it. I only have my beloved stand mixer (used frequently), the kettle and a jar of wooden spoons etc out - it's fabulous to see a clean sweep of worktop.
I agree. I only have a kettle and a bottle of washing up liquid on the kitchen tops and it makes it look much neater and it's easier to wipe down without lots of stuff cluttering up the place.:)0 -

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion though, as you say, you have only read a little of the thread. i think had you read more that you might realise she has helped many of us clarify what we want to do with our time and unnecessary stuff doesn't factor into it. Well done you for finding other methods earlier - i wish i had.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

Dear Calicocat, MK from a young age wanted to be organised, took the time to try out several recommended methods, analysed what she was and was not happy with, and came up with her own method that is working, and working for many people. If she was a medical doctor she'd be given honorary degrees. Why not be happy with a new development that is doing so many people so much good? Are you wombling, too, in '22? € 58,96 = £ 52.09Wombling in Restrictive Times (2021) € 2.138,82 = £ 1,813.15Wombabeluba 2020! € 453,22 = £ 403.842019's wi-wa-wombles € 2.244,20 = £ 1,909.46Wombling to wealth 2018 € 972,97 = £ 879.54Still a womble 2017 #25 € 7.116,68 = £ 6,309.50Wombling Free 2016 #2 € 3.484,31 = £ 3,104.590 -
We have one of these - I agree about the safety!
I'm another fan of the wall-mounted magnetic knife rack, and I keep my kitchen scissors and veg peeler up there, too.
Kitchen counters, kitchen counters, what are these things whereof thou speaketh............?
My kitchen is a measly 6 x 6 ft and there is a tiny scrap of counter on either side of the cooker, and a strip along the wall at rightangles to the sink which is about 4 ft long x 18 inches deep. Lack of counterspace was the reason I gave my microwave away.
On the small bit to the left of the cooker, I have a wooden cubbyhole thingy, about 4 inches deep and filling the space between the counter and the underside of the wall cabinet. Its six cubbies contain the tea caddy, two lots of irregular tea (decaff and herbal), the butter dish, a cubby of vinegar/salt/ pepper and a cubby with a cut-down fruit punnet holding twisty-ties, bottle tops, bag clips and misc like that.
Between the cubbies and the wall stand two wooden boards, one for veg and one for bread. On the other side of the cooker stands a pot of utensils and some tall clip-top jars of pasta, rice, lentils.
The long bit of worktop on the other side of the kitchen contains two rattan square baskets, one atop another, each about 10 inches square. One of onions and one of spuds. These are tucked up the corner. The rest of the counter is, theoretically empty, but actually contains a rectangular tub for my peelings etc, and a marrow atm.
Everything else is cupboarded or, in the case of the mugs, hanging off hooks on the underside of the cupboard. Oh, and wul and a bottle of cream cleanser live out by the sink, plus a soap dish.
Could be better, could be worse. The windowsill is about 2 inches deep and useless for anything at all, plus anything up there would fall outdoors if I opened the window, as I do when cooking.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I can't see how taking a knife out of one of these
is really that different/dangerous to taking it out of something like this
We only have the 5 knives that came with the block, so not a huge amount of scope for confusion. Does anyone have an in drawer knife block? Your thoughts please?
Personally I'm not a fan of the wall mounted knife holders. I wouldn't want them on display. If the in-drawer knife block isn't a go-er, then the knife block will stay on the counter.know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0
